Virgil's is reeeeeeal good.

I like almost all root beer. Suprisingly, one of the best offerings I've found as of late is the generic house brand at Walgreens stores. It's called DeLish and comes in a glass bottle. I get a couple of bottles of that a week, and put them in the freezer for about 30 minutes before drinking it.

Another thing that I've become fond off... and that's adding an ounce of root beer schnapps to a glass of fine root beer. Phillips Root Beer 100 is really nice. You can't really taste it as alcohol... but gives most any root beer a richer taste.

Root beer is like vegemite ... you have to grow up with it to appreciate it.

A&W tastes like cough medicine, or Southern Comfort. Yuk!

I didn't know Hiram's was still out there. Loved it as a kid. Then again, I loved A&W as a kid. I remember my grandparents buying it for us in half gallon jugs to bring home so we could keep some in the fridge. Trust me, when you live forty miles from the nearest fast-food, having a glass of A&W is pretty close to heaven,

They made a "Horehound" brewed softdrink ( same style as the yankie root beer), which when partaken of was like "An Angel crying on your tongue!"

It could never possibly be topped!!! JMHO

I remember those names from childhood though don't see them much anymore...

when I was a kid there was an old wharehouse down the industrial part of the suburb where Bundaberg soft drinks shipped out from to Brisbane shops...

we used to sneak a few stubbies out of the stacks of crates around back on weekends.... thinking it was real beer...

there were seriously funny names to us Root Beer and (w)Horehound... smirk...

they weren't that bad to drink hot...;).... weird taste... but OK as booty...

I wonder if drinking Root beer ever got anyone one?...;)

And for those "fact junkies" ... real sassafras roots are not used these days because the stuff is carcinogenic.

It's also the primary precursor for the manufacture of Ecstacy (MDMA).

Not exactly root beer - but I think this might be an ok place to talk about it -

I stumbled upon Fentiman's Curiosity Cola a couple of years ago... and man-oh-man I like that stuff. That do make a ginger beer (which I do not care for), but no actual root beer as of yet.

Quote:
Fentimans Curiosity Cola is a botanically brewed carbonated cola soft drink. The brewing process used gives the drink an alcohol content of up to 0.5%, but this small amount still allows it to be sold as a soft drink. It was listed as the No.1 Cola in America by the New York Times. In Europe and North America it is legal to sell the cola to minors.

The drink is flavored with catuaba extract and therefore contains catuabine alkaloids, related to cocaine but inactive, in much the same way that Coca-Cola has done.

i like mug. and a&w. and barq's. and dad's. and frosty's....

we used to have a pizza inn a little less than a mile from our house when i was in elementary school. I'd go there with my family at night for the buffet, and me and my friends would ride our bikes there during the summer to play arcade games...... i had a barq's every time i was there.

I can't have a barq's now without seriously craving some pizza and wanting to play Pole Position....

I like Blue Sky organic. They make good Ginger Ale, too. I loved Frosty as a kid. A&W too, but best in a frosty mug at an A&W Drive In. We used to get Dad's Root Beer, but it was sweeter and less flavorable then others. IBC is a friend's Holy Sacrament. He takes cases to music festivals and spreads the good news in bottles.

This thread caused me to go to World Market today to look for some root beer. I ended up with something that I've yet to try: Abita Root Beer. I'm familiar with their offerings of beer, but not root beer.

I'll give it a shot tonight and report back.
