The "I hate semi-gloss guitars" thread.

Your mileage may vary, but I hate the look, the feel, and application of semi gloss finishes to colored guitars. They just feel wrong, and seem cheap most of the time.

Just give me a nice hand rubbed gloss lacquer, and I'm a happy camper.

Clarification: A semi-gloss lacquer over a natural wood guitar can be really cool, but I truly dislike semi-gloss colors.

I was going to post "then don't buy one" but I realized who started this thread, so I changed my mind.

Don't build one.

Of course this means that all of us with less than glossy guitars will post them.

Satin finishes don't require work.

I can't see myself either making or buying a guitar that's not shiny!

I can deal with the satin finish on the back of the neck, as in US Fender and Martin (and even they shine up after a few year's play) but that's about it.

But....if someone else prefers matte finishes, that's fine too.

I like satin finishes on necks. For everything else I like them to look glossy. Satin finish on solid color or on wood makes them look like cheap plastic.

I dont have a problem with them if the price is right and if they play and sound good.

Q: Why do they call it "satin" finish?

A: Because they wouldn't sell as much if they called it "sucko" finish.

I generally prefer gloss finish too but if the guitar was good the finish wouldn't matter too much to me.

Gloss finish guy myself. When it comes to finishing guitars, to me nothing says pro more than a beautiful shiny gloss finish. Back of the neck is for satin.

I think I agree with Rich, though I'd allow for exceptions like rat-rod-style guitars etc. The matte finish on the low-end Gibsons looks really cheesy to me, however. I wouldn't buy one.

But it's okay if you guys like 'em!

I should mention that I see Mr. Rice's point. Satin finish is great for hiding fingerprints, but often (not always) doesn't look so great in solid colours. Semi gloss lacquer with visible wood grain? Very nice. Flat black rat rod style? That can be cool. Elias Graves makes the case that a semi gloss solid colour can look great, but I would say the natural finish on the T style guitar pictured looks better.
