Re: Stage 10 - Valverde wins

If you're the best, you're the best. It's as simple as that.
Too bad the Tour 2005 ended so soon. :(

Some serious but-kickin' today . . .

What a great stage for the Discovery team! This was one of the most fun stages to watch - it's the first time I've literally been on the edge of my chair this year. This stage really created some separation and gave an indication as to who is going to be up for the challenge - some real surprises. I thought the handshake at the end of the stage was a nice touch - LA knew that Valverde and Mancebo were the glue that held the lead group together at the end.

This is a fun race!

because we like taking the stress of inner city living, & recreating it in a beautiful setting,

Team discovery blew away the competition yesterday, & im pretty sure lance couldve blown away the final group of 3, but is reserving his energy.I dont know how the rest of the team will go though, towards the end of the stage they looked stuffed!
Where was Mayo, Vinokourov, & Ulrich? a sign of things to come in the mountains?? me thinks so.

Yeah- Stage 10 was very exciting. Amazing how many "big names" were dropped at the end. I can't help but wonder if Lance actually gave the stage to Valverde... no offense intended to Valverde, but Lance has done things like that before, for team mates and other riders (remember Pantani?). I know Lance didn't obviously sit up right before the line, but i think he didn't sit up ON PURPOSE. In other words, "hey Val, thanks for the help putting some time into my rivals, you & me did the final 5K together, you go ahead and take the stage- I just want yellow. I'll make sure it looks natural, because neither of us want the controversy."

I guess I'm just having a hard believing Lance could drop the hammer like he did, (like he always does), and be with Valverde all the way to the top, even LEADING HIM OUT at the very end, and lose. Again, nothing against Valverde- he had an amazing ride yesterday.

You know who's really impressing? RASSMUSSEN. An EX-MOUNTAIN BIKER! Holy Crap! This guy came out of nowehre to climb with the best pros.

Yes, that's exactly what he did. Miguel Indurain did it all the time.
It's just a psychological thing, like "I gave you the stage so I hope you don't give me a hard time when I try to defend my yellow jersey."

Great ride by Vino. Too bad it didn't move him up much in the GC. I was surprised to see him dropped the day before. I been a Vino fan ever since the famous crash (& Lance's 'cross country' ride) on that descent in the tour 2 years ago. Having a brain block at the moment- forget his team mate who went down hard, broke his pelvis, he's riding in this year's tour- but Vino stopped and waited for him, even tho there was no way he was getting back up. Hell of a nice thing to do- especially since it was unnecesary.

Thats the one I was thinking of as well. Also, didn't Ulrich wait for Lance to come back on course in that stage? A gift in return for Lance's gesture the year before.

I believe they were chasing Vinokourov when Beloki fell and broke his thigh-bone, wrest and elbow. He left the Tour by ambulance. :(

Vino won that stage.

Yeah-yeah- Beloki. I was thinking of all 3 riders: Beloki, Lance, and Vino. Beloki also broke his pelvis. Hasn't been the same since.

Exciting stage today, tomorrow should be even better! I hope Lance's team can recover and stay with the leaders for a while longer, the stage tomorrow is the toughest in the tour this year.

Yeah- amazing how quickly Discovery Team (and all the teams) were dropped on saturday. I couldn't believe there were so many "stars" up front w/o the help of team mates.

Anybody know the deal with Vino's blue jersey? (instead of pink like the rest of T-Mobile?)

Vinokourov won the national championship in Kazachstan this year. National champions can wear their "special" jersey for a year. There's also McEwen wearing a jersey different from his team mates (Champion of Australia).

List: http://www.roadcycling.com/news/article1186.shtml

Remember last year when Klöden wore the german jersey? And Ulrich 4 years ago? Etc...

Great stage today!! Congratulations to George Hincapie he had a great ride. I think the remaining stages are pretty flat so it will be almost impossible for anyone to get any time out of Armstrong's lead. The time trial will be the only place where time will be gained or lost and Lance will probably gain a big chunk of time if he wants to.

couldnt happen to a nicer guy

George totally deserved that win yesterday, after riding with lance for the last 7 years, & winning a stage that lance didnt "give" to a team mate must be amazing.I think the after race interview was cool, he was very humble, & really couldnt belive it.Amazing stuff, on the hardest stage of this years tour no less!

I love watching Lance and the tour. But I do have to say that after 6 wins it seems that Team DC appears to be a tad "too perfect." They let others win because it suits them and they are so single minded about being smart and only doing what needs done to win overall that some of the competition is lacking.

Of course, it only seems that way because they are successful. I'm sure the other teams put just as much into their efforts and we don't see them in this light because they aren't winning.

But for the other teams I wonder if they don't see the Team Discovery as a steam roller squashing their chances at greatness. And, then this becomes an issue of national pride and character as well.

Next year, the tour should be a free for all. With no heir apparent and all the teams doing their very best to dominate. I wonder if it will be as popular here in the States as it is this year?

Steamroller . . .

One of the reasons for the continued success of the Disco team is that they are mostly mono-dimensional - they forcus all their efforts on the Tour. I think most other teams embrace a much broader perspective and schedule. If Lance rode as many races the others, he might not be as powerful and dominant as he is (but I still think he would win). That said, the TdF is one of the premier athletic events in the world, and aiming for success there is a choice that the team makes. For Americans, it is the ONLY bike race of note, so it seems natural that it would be the major target of the American team. I hope that Lance's success in increasing awareness and support of cancer treatment can also help create a greater interest and participation in cycling - I know that it worked for me. I started riding again after last year's TdF (after a 33 year hiatus), and I know I'm healthier for it.

I think that Lance has already anointed a couple of the riders as possible successors - he always compliments Basso, the only one who seems to have the same grit, ability, and focus as Lance. Popovych also seems to be one of the young riders who gets the nod, according to the pundits. But it will be a free-for-all next year. I think that the winner will come from a team that emulates the training and tactical methods of Team Discovery - that seems to have worked pretty well.

I know I'll be in front of the TV every morning watching the '06 Tour - right after my morning ride!

I agree, this is a great race, great athletes, all of them. Go Lance! I also enjoy seeing the little villages and towns the riders pass through, makes me and the wife want to take a vacation in France. I've been to Paris twice, but never out in the countryside. I've seen the Alps from Austria, Germany and Switzerland, but not France. Such a nice looking area. I wanna go!

The crowd along side the road look to be a bit of a problem, they sort of get in the way of the riders, push them, etc. IMO they should curb their enthuisasm a bit.

I'm glad we all here agree on this subject. However, I was reading a message board on the TdF over on AOL, and the tone was not so pleasant. There were a lot of people poo-pooing bike racing, calling it a sissy sport for liberals and the French. They liked football and NASCAR. They were also slamming Lance as a deadbeat dad. I can't believe how mean spirited and narrow minded some of my fellow Americans are. It's a shame.

By all means you should go! We've been to France 3 times for a couple of weeks at a time. We've spent about 1/3rd of that time in Paris and the rest of the time on the road.

We spent a week in Provience. My wife found a 400 year old farm house owned by a guy in NYC that was for rent and we used it as our base camp. It was in a tiny little town that was 1000 years old.

Then we spent a week in Normandy one year and traveled around to all the towns, battlefields and monuments.

In between all of these trips we've driven all around to dozens of little towns and they look just like the TdF. Plus, when we stay in Paris we rent apartments in non-touristy areas. To a certain extent we feel like "locals". Well, locals that can't speak the language better than a 3 yr old.

That's one of the reasons we watch so diligently when the tour is on. We love seeing the towns and castles, etc.

Paul Green
PS. We've had the good fortune to rent houses in Italy and do the same there. Highly recommended!
