At this precise moment I'm listening to Hocus Pocus by Focus. Jan Akerman's solos in that are cool.

The Crawdaddies

Just now heard, for the first time, this group filmed for a Kentucky Educational Television (KET) program called Jubilee. These guys are good and fun.

Some telecaster content too.

from Jubilee's page: The Crawdaddies

Cajun, zydeco, funk, swing, soul, reggae, roots, and rock fuse into a groove-laden sound all its own.

listening skills...

im always listening to peter mayer

pete has been jimmy buffetts lead guitarist for the past 17 years. but sounds nothing like buffett when he does HIS THING.

he was an established solo/band artist before buffett and is once again out with his band (when not touring with jimmy), writing and performing some amazing pop/folk/jazz/world music.

he performs an annual xmas show held in various churches across the country that is nothing less than amazing!!! pete provides top shelf fingerstyle acoustic guitar and the best vocals you'll ever hear (it would make paul simon and sting envious) and he uses a three piece string section (with solo violin interspersement), world class perscussion and vocal provided by r scott bryan (sheryl crow alumnus), native american flutes, pennywhistle and flutes played with absolute love and precision by mark holland, and great jazz/classical bass and vocals from pete's brother jim mayer (buffetts bassist for 17 years, also).

i cant even begin to describe the music these people create, live in these churches!!!

the arrangements (by pete) are incredible, shifting from folk to an india raga, to classical to new agey jazz, to rock to bluegrass... all in one song!!!!!!!

and it works!!!

very depthy stuff.. and hes in a class very few of us will ever reach.

peter is an incredible talent and has surrounded himself with incredibly tallented musicians

he has 3 xmas albums to date with mostly oriiginal material. 1 studio, 1 live and 1 that brand new as of last week.

all are great!!!

his website:

http://www.petermayer.com/

check out the audio and video samples and see him when he comes around!!!!!!!!!

enjoy!

James Burton

I got this disc at Tower yesterday: "The Guitar Sounds of James Burton". It has mostly instrumental versions of Mystery Train, Susie Q, etc. The cover of Fire and Rain (James Taylor, I think) is pretty nice. Burton's work with Ricky Nelson remains my favorite, though.

Currently...

...Rory Gallagher's performing Pistol Slapper Blues for the second time in the same show- this is a VCD (I'm kinda watching, too!) of a RockPalast broadcast from 6/10/76. The cameras weren't set the first time, so we get to hear it twice- not a bad thing, in my book. Oops, now he's brought the band out to do Goin' To My Hometown...

I've been on a John Hiatt kick lately. The Tiki Bar is Open and Crossing Muddy Waters. Funny how you can like something when it's new and pick it back up and love it even more later.

In my car

L.A. traffic affords lots of listening time. The last few days:

New: Death Cab for Cutie's "Plans"
Not so new: Subdudes' "Primitive Streak"
Old: Bee Gees' "Horizontal"
On Assignment: a tape of the bass parts to a dozen Christmas songs I'll be singing Christmas Eve as guest member of an Episcopalian Church choir. (Including a lengthy and very challenging piece by Gustav Holst.)

Max.
Jim Hall 'Live' (LP). I enjoy vinyl, and like Jazzer's & tele players alike. I recently also listened to BB King 'Lucille Talks Back'. My daughter picked it upf or me at her college radio station. Vinyl still rules in my house. My 16 yr old son has been borrowing my Wes Montgomery LP's. Midnight Blue, good choice, my fave Kenny Burrell reording.

1 degree of separation

Listened to BBM in the car today...Jack Bruce ...great voice
Gary Moore ...getting some nice tones and copping licks in the style of Cream-era Clapton
and, of course, Ginger Baker with his astounding drumming

Which brings me to "Sunrise on the Sufferbus" which has been staring at me for a few days and which has been mentioned a few times already...will definitely give it a listen this weekend
