I had the same problem with The Velvet Underground reunion shows (I bought the CD). Except in this case Lou Reed would wait until the last possible minute before just speed talking in his lines. Not cool.
That's not cool at all, and no one gets a pass, in my book, no matter who they are. To me, if you're a professional musician, and you do a tune halfheartedly, you're stealing my time and money. You're a thief.

If you don't feel strongly about a particular tune, don't perform it. And if you don't feel strongly about performing at all, don't bother, period.

OK, enough of my preaching. And now back to the original thread already in progress.

"Jagged"

Was listening to the Figgs a little earlier. Looking forward to taking my son to see one (if not both) of their shows in NYC this weekend.

I picked up a copy of Ted Heath and His Music, Original Recordings, 1948-1952. He had one of the tightest bands from the post-war big band era.

Right this second it's Ray Charles singing "I don't need no doctor" from an old "Records frim the Crypt" show on "WWOZ In Exile" online. That's the New Orleans great radio station that has somehow gotten ahold of tapes of old shows and is airing those while they try to get going again after Katrina. (At this second they've moved on through Chuck Jackson "I don't want to cry' and then a promo for International Vintage Guitars--how cool is that?

Last three CD's in my car--

Soul's Chapel

A Matt Murphy CD that I picked up used--don't know the name cause it's in the car.

And a new William Clark CD of a live show in Germany in the ninties that his widow just put out. It's well recorded and a good show, a great new disc for William Clark fans. I got it direct from John Markowski (John Marx) who is the guitar player on this CD, sings a tune too. Alot of great harp and guitar on this one.

at this very moment

just now I'm listening to the new Jerry Douglas CD, amazing player playing amazing, though I do wish he'd lay off the fusion stuff . . .

if you'd caught me last night, or yesterday afternoon, or yesterday morning, it would have been "Girls Can Tell" by Spoon. great band.

or at the gym yesterday, yep, "How the West Was Won" live album by Zep -- the power and the glory . . .

I'm listening to the new disc from The Darkness, "One Way Ticket To Hell... And Back". I haven't really formed an opinion on it yet. I feel like it doesn't quite rock enough. The production is outstanding though (done by Roy Thomas Baker, Queen's long-time producer). His influence is evident with the ridiculous amounts of vocal layering on this album.

Last night I was listening to the Amazing Rhythm Aces "Stacked Deck". Great band. Lots of quirky little blues tunes with some fresh ideas.

I listen to stuff on headphones at work all day so I usually get in 4-6 albums per day. Those are the two most worth mentioning.

I saw Alejandro Escoveda 4 years ago, before he got sick. It was a really good show, the first time I'd heard him. He was the opener for a solo Robbie Fulks, who changed my ideas about a one-man one guitar performance.

OK, here's what's been on since my last post:

What song?

I'm listening to the Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" Riff on a Jewelry Store commercial break during the Dallas Cowboy / New York Giants football game on TV.

What was the original song the Vanilla Ice ripped off for that Riff I know the group sued and won.

Edit: Never mind, I couldn't wait and Googled>
Quote:
It sort of brings to mind that old interview in which Vanilla Ice attempted to defend the difference between "Ice Ice Baby" and "Under Pressure" ("dun dun dun duh-duh-duh dun" vs. "DUN dun dun dun duh-duh-duh dun").

this morning:johnny cash live at folsom prison. just finished listening to the magic numbers on the train before that (decided to get the tube in this morning)

right now though it's just a gentle hum of CPUs in a very quiet pre-9am office, the occasional bit of printing from accross the room and my glamorous assistant abi rustling the filing.

Roy Orbison Black & White Night

Just caught the tail end of the show on KET PBS fundraiser recorded live at the Coconut Grove. Pretty Woman featured James Burton and Bruce Springsteen jamming on Telecasters. Others on stage were T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, K.D. Lang, and Bonnie Raitt... Pretty impressive lineup. I see where both the CD and DVD have been released. Looks like I may have found a Christmas gift for me and my wife.
By the way, if I have the date correct, Roy passed away on December 6, 1988.

I've been listening to a lot of calming and emotional music this week, because a lot of stuff is going on in my life at the moment, and I always find music to be the best release.

I've been listening to a lot of Mogwai (think Pink Floyd instrumentals except without Gilmour), Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley and surprise surprise Pink Floyd. :)

Right now?

"In My Life", the Beatles.

I'm listening to the entire Rubber Soul CD right now.

Hey, trivia time... Does anyone know how they came up with the name for the album? I was just wondering.

Oh, new CD. Chris Isaak Christmas.

Pinback - Summer in Abaddon. I find it original and interesting and it gets better with every listen. So different from what is played on the radio these days.
