I feel dirty

I'm working in Barnes & Noble today, using their free wi-fi, and I happened to see an interesting looking book as I returned from a trip to the men's room. I picked it up and was going to buy it, but then wondered how much cheaper I could get it from Amazon. So, still using B&N's wi-fi, I ordered the book (a used copy in good condition) from an Amazon seller. Price: $6 shipped (the new copy in B&N would have cost me $14). Oh well, at least B&N got some money from me for coffee and a sandwich.

Am I a bad man?

Whose free wi-fi are you going to use once you single-handedly close down B&N?

BTW: I've done this at Target. Amazon price check app with bar code scanner is truly devious.

Why didn't you just sit in one of their comfy chairs, read it there, then put it back on the shelf. I am pretty sure that is what a lot of those folks are doing. I guess they, at least, buy some coffee to drink.

I do this regularly. Go to B&N store, and browse the books. Find one that looks good, pull out the Kindle and check it there. If it comparable (abridged vs unabridged, pictures, etc) and cheaper, download on the spot.

The 21st century is weird.

It's sad. The closest bookstore is now 40 miles away from me since Borders and Atlantic Books (regional chain) went out of business. The local people who worked there lost their jobs, the landlord lost their tenant, the town lost the tax revenue, the state lost the sales tax.

If Amazon (or whoever) had what I wanted at the best price, I might buy it. But it would just feel wrong to do what you have done. And inside you seem to know that, or you wouldn't feel "dirty".

Wait -why aren`t the publishers who marked the book UP to $14 the bad men?
They took all the comfy chairs OUT of our BN -replaced with hard wood ones. Anyway,
Good for you!

Haha, passive aggressive "free loader" control at it's finest. We've go a place in Denver called "The Tattered Cover" that still welcomes readers and browsers with comfy old antique furniture and and a great coffee shop/deli.

Maybe the "big box" bookstores would still be surviving if they hadn't over expanded so much and if they'd paid more attention to their online competition. If you're gonna charge twice as what someone can get it for online you better have something more to offer than a just convenient shopping mall location.

No, because you aren't comparing apples and oranges. The cheap book the OP bought online was a used copy and the one in the store was new.

I don't disagree with that. In the end, it's just business. If you can't run it in a profitable fashion, you pay the ultimate price (unless you're General Motors and the government bails you out). And when the big stores first opened up, I never understood how it could work when they allowed people to use them like a library.

Yes, it's their own fault. But I still miss them (and Circuit City and CompUSA, etc).

I'm just curious how you would handle things in a house of ill repute? I guess if you bought coffee, it would be uh, a wash.

What about the coffee shops that missed out on your business because the bookstore started selling them?

After picking up something new and interesting and thinking about making a purchase, he would use their hot spot to find an older, cheaper version and arrange to have it sent to his home.

I buy everything off of amazon from movies to 35 lb bags of ferret food... 4 hungry ferrets here... for $70 a year i get my free 2 day shipping and im a happy consumer. I do sometimes go into b&n or best buy if i want to check something out but rarely buy from them. Plus with amazon you dont have to worry about the old people in the express line with 2 carts of groceries paying with a check...

But using your point, B&N and Borders single handedly ran all the mom and pop bookstores out of buisness... karma sucks

A reflection of the world we live in. I've been guilty of going Amazon so many times for a variety of reasons. Choice, price, availability, convenience, ..................

Take advantage of B&N's stupid business model while you can. It's like a library with great creature comforts except you can't borrow the books.
