Many people know A.C. Gilbert as the inventory of the Erector Set, the savior of American Flyer electric trains, and the maker of many other interesting toys that defined american boyhoods for over 50 years...

Interesting... I am very curious about the landing of the pole vaulters. There doesn't seem to be anything special they landed on. That must have hurt!

Nope, nothing special at all! Usually the pit was just sand...if they were lucky there was hay.

Far cry from today's mattress-like pads.
