Scumbag stole my daughter’s bike!

Scumbag stole my daughter’s bike!

My two daughters (ages 10 and 20) had ridden their bikes to their grandmother’s house to swim in the community pool.

They both left their bikes parked outside the gate of the pool. When they got ready to leave, my 10-year old’s Specialized Rockhopper was gone and in its place was a crappy, rusted-out piece of crap Roadmaster. The weird thing was that the crap bike was the same color as her Rockhopper.

We called the cops and filled out a report, but they said they really can’t do anything about it other than file the serial number with the national registry database.

The older daughter’s Trek was still there, which makes me think that it was a lone thief who happened to be riding by on his clunker and spotted the Specialized and thought it was time for an upgrade. Hey, it’s the same color, right? No one will ever know!”

Scumbag…

Man, were they chained up or anything? I got nervous leaving my Specialized hard rock in the thing at school without my lock on it, even though it was chained up from 9-3.

Hell. That was a while ago.

Watch Craigslist.

If it doesn't turn up there, a similar bike will that you can buy for a replacement.

If there is one thing in this world that I hate, it is an unlocked footlocker!! AH, takes me back to my days in the Corps.

Sucks about the bike. I remember growing up and not having to worry about that at all. We'd ride to school and there'd be 50 bikes all in the racks unlocked. We'd come out at 3 and they'd all still be there.

She's handling it pretty well. Her mother, on the other hand...

Big sister (age 20) was upset, too. "What, they didn't like my Trek? No fair, they liked her bike better than MINE?"

Stinkin' thieves...

Time for a lock & chain that gets used everytime it leaves your garage or other secure location.

I still remember my cousin's bike being stolen in 1963.

I'd never heard of bicycle theft before. Very careful after that.

I had to leave my oldest decent bike as a canoe or kayak shuttle sometimes, locked and well hidden in the brush. Eventually someone "found" it one time and turned it in; it took time to figure out what happened. Not terribly long after, it got "found" again and the "thief" had it in his trunk but hung around. I "befriended" him and somehow got him to allow he'd "found" it and he gave it back. But I got the sense, my luck was running low after leaving the thing like this hundreds of times. Maybe I was being sloppy; maybe I wasn't stashing it well enough or canoeing/ whitewater had gotten too popular.

Anyway, I always thought it would be lost to theft, and it was. Katrina took it, and a few others as well. :^

Leaving a Specialized bike lying about unchained is asking for it to be stolen. My Specialized FSR Sport is 14 years old and I worry about leaving it chained up with a $100 braided cable lock.

People who steal bikes and college textbooks . . . the absolute worst.

Unfortunately unless you live in Mayberry you'll need a lock and chain. Just a fact of modern life, no use fighting it. In my neighborhood you can't leave a bag of trash outside or someone will steal it.

Unfortunately, this is a fact of life now. A couple of years ago, we left town for a few days to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. My daughter forgot to put her bike in the basement, instead leaving it under our back deck unlocked. Yep, when we got home it was gone

Good to hear about the little one. Tell the older one she needs to feel thankful!

I had a vintage bike stolen off my porch - AND they cut through the chain to get to it. I walked outside and it felt like the beginning of Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

If they didn't grab the nicer unlocked bikes at the community pool, keep an eye out. People who ride bikes to community pools generally live pretty close.

When I go into town by bike I usually ride a rotten old one because new bikes get damaged or stolen very often here. And it even doesn`t help to lock these with a chain.
And though I only ride to town with seemingly unattractive bikes I had two of them stolen within the last year. Thievery really sucks big time.

That happened to me with my very first mountain bike, around 1990 or so. I felt SO violated. We lived in an apartment, and I thought it would be safe locked to the wrought iron railing outside our door, had no place to really keep it inside as our apt was so small. I couldn't believe my bike was gone. My wife and I both made very little over minimum wage, and that bike was pretty expensive, I was just sick, dumb on my part though. :(

Similar thing happened to me around 1992. The thief/s just unscrewed the street sign at the top and slid the bike right off. I'm not the sharpest tool in the drawer, but I learned a lesson. People that steal will get theirs, in one way or another.
