Feelies, anyone!?

anyone else here listen to the Feelies? I always feel so alone when I mention them, and I figure some of the sensible people here HAVE to know this great little band.

Anyone?

Oh, I've got that album. Isn't it the one with the doubletime cover of "What Goes On"?

More people would probably know about the Feelies if they had relaxed their rule of gigging only on national holidays. Really.

I love the Feelies! I used to have 'Only Life' and 'The Good Earth', before i got rid of all my vinyl. They're fellow Jerseyans...i'd love to see if those albums are still in print on CD...

Nope

those aren't in print, but Only Life is about $15 used (Good Earth goes for over $60). It's sad. The best you can do is get some one who has them to burn it for you...literally, that's what their former record label is doing for people.

I own the tapes and figuring since I already owned the music I *cough* somewhat illegally obtained about 30 of the mp3s.

The Feelies were pretty cool. I started out with Only Life, then went to Crazy Rhythms and Time For a Witness. My favorite by them is a cover of "Dancing Barefoot" (with Brenda Sauter on vocals, and Mercer doing the whole spoken word thing at the end) on a flexidisc that came with "The BOB" underground music magazine sometime in the late 80's. U2 covered this song a couple of years later, and I always thought that they got the idea from the Feelies cover.

That version of "Dancing Barefoot" is profoundly great! I remember a few years later when U2 did a version, and man, it couldn't hold a candle!

I dug the Feelies.

Cheers, Tim

I loved these guys. So cool to see them mentioned here. By the way, a copy of The Good Earth can be found reasonably ($15) by going here:

I just ordered some other stuff from Twin Tone not long ago- they burn these "custom" CD's from whatever masters or sources they have on hand. The ones I've gotten sound great. What a fine record. I think I wore that one out way back when, and I'm gonna need to place another TT order now!

Bands the Feelies are immediately making me recall & want to mention: The Magnolias (long lost in the Minneapolis shuffle when compared to their contemporaries, Soul Asylum, Husker Du & Mats); Miracle Legion (another great band similar to the Feelies vein); Guadalcanal Diary (could've/should've been as huge as REM) & the Mekons (long live Jon Langford!).

Thanks for the blast from the past. I'm gonna keep my eye out for a used copy of Only Life too.

Don't know if y'all are into the dB's, but the original lineup (Chris Stamey, Peter Holsapple, Gene Holder and Will Rigby) are about to release a new CD of all new stuff. Oughta be very good!

The Good Earth

It's still up there among my favorite albums. I love how the vocals are mixed way down low, like one of the instruments.

Simple, great tunes.

Oh, yeah...the Feelies were the band that played the high school reunion in the movie "Something Wild"--they did a twisted version of Bowie's "Fame".

Great movie. If you haven't seen it, you should. Great soundtrack, too.

yeah, it's almost as if they're not pompous enough to try to claim the words are more important than the guitars or percussion. Though the lyrics are pretty good on some songs, like "The Undertow".

funny

the thing that inspired me to start this thread was seeing a copy of The Good Earth on vinyl on eBay. If anyone wants it, it's $9.99, has about a day left on it.

I have a whole bunch of really obscure stuff that will most likely never see any sort of CD reissue. I have this fantasy that I will someday digitize it all. We'll see if it ever happens.

My current setup is:

AUX LINE OUT of turntable/receiver into Sony Digital 8 camcorder;
FireWire out of camcorder to PC.
Adobe Premier export of audio to a WAV file.
Partition into individual cuts.
Burn to CD.

I'm too cheap to streamline this process, although it takes a while to get one album converted.
