From what I have read, Brent looks up to Jerry Reed a lot, and some old blues players. Of course Chet is on there also I'm sure.
Even though they can blow through the fret board like crazy, they still have to have someone that they looked up to that they inspired to be like when they were younger. I think that even though they can play faster, or get more work, they still look up to the same guys. Maybe I'm wrong. |

Brent has huge respect for so many. If you pin him down though, and ask him who does he look up to musically he says - Jerry Reed, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Sting, James Taylor, Ray Charles and jazz pianist Keith Jarrett are on the very top of his list. He doesn't focus on a person's playing so much, (but he did when he was growing up and teaching himself to play) now as an adult he is way more into what the music is saying to him overall. Oh, I left out Lenny Breau - Brent is totally amazed by what Lenny did with the guitar. He has a recording of Lenny playing My Funny Valentine in a crowded club. It's an audio tape and the people in the club aren't even paying much attention to Lenny, and Lenny is totally unaware of it. He is in his own world. This cut of the song isn't available on any of the Lenny Breau albums. Brent said it is like a perfect diamond or the most beautiful piece of art, right there in front of all of those people, and they are looking right through it, not even appreciating or understanding what is happening right in the room with them. He says it is so beautiful it makes his heart hurt to listen to it.

Keith Jarrett? Wow, that is surprising!
I'm a huge fan of Keith Jarrett. Facing You is one of my favorite albums. I think most people get turned off by Keith's singing(?) along while he's playing. I also love the stuff he's done with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. Everyone should check out God Bless the Child from Standards Vol 1. One of my faves.
