Hear About The Chinese Girl Swimmer Who Beat The Men's Gold Medal Time?

Well, we hope the Olympic athletes are good sports, but last night we got our first cheater of these Olympics.

In the 400m IM swimming event last night we saw a 16 year old Chinese girl swim like she had an outboard motor attached to her. She smashed the world record, and, get this, she posted a time that was faster than the men's gold medal winning time! Yes, she swan the freestyle portion faster than Ryan Lochte - the gold medal winning man!

It gets even odder. This girl never won this event before in her life -- yet last night she smashes the world record!

It is funny how far the steroid users go, but when a 16 year old girl posts a time better than the gold medal winning male's time, well, then you've really gone too far and stepped into the hilarious zone. If you are a girl who is going to cheat, don't cheat so much where you actually beat the guys!

Steroids. Good for medicine, bad for sport.

Was she tested positive for steroids or is that conjecture?

It does seem odd. If any country had the resources to develop a steroid or other substance that couldn't be detected by the IOC, I would have to believe it would be China, or Russia.....

But you never know. Phenoms do come around now and again too.

You don't have to be a chemist to notice steroids. The real tell for steroids is a spike in level of performance. A baseball player that hits 12, 15 homeruns every season and then starts hitting 50, 55 every season, well, that's the tell. We've seen that a lot in baseball.

This female swimmer last night had an insane spike in performance. Never having won the event in her life and suddenly she wins it and shatters the world record while doing so. That does not happen naturally. Throw in the fact that she swam faster than the gold medal winning man and this actually becomes more hilarious than maddening.

well it would have been hard to win the event when she was 12, I think we can let that tell go

She actually showed similar performance at the world championships last year in Shanghai in the 200m where she put on a big burst of speed in the freestyle leg as she did here.

It is an oddity but I will wait for the evidence. It will be interesting to see if all Chinese perform this way. If an undetectable steroid is available I'm sure they have juiced the entire team.

Do you think we will get to a place when (steroids or not) the human body just can't go any quicker ?
Is there a 'that's it' point ?

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but Ryan Lochtie swam a 4:05.18, and Schiwen Ye a 4:28.43. She didn't go faster than the gold medal winning man.

She was .2 of a second faster in the final leg, but with Lochtie finishing three and a half seconds ahead of second place, maybe he wasn't giving it his all. And the fastest final leg was still set by a man, Yuya Horihata.

She did beat the previous female world record (Stephanie Rice) by just over a second, but the male world record is still held by Phelps at 4:03.84.

She may have improved on her own personal best, but at 16 taking part in her first Olympics, very much in the worlds eye, the adrenaline must count for something. I don't see any signs of foul play, in fact good on her for doing so well.

Her time in the freestyle leg was a little faster than Ryan. Breaking a record by a second in a 400m race in big but at all unheard of ou unusual. She did beat her old pearsonal best by over 5 seconds though.

I think what was meant was she was faster in the final leg of the event than the male swimmer. Who knows if they are doping, but for her to swim the last leg of the swim faster than the male medalist is a little unusual to say the least.

No, we used to see that a lot in baseball, not anymore. And guys aren't going from throwing 88mph to 95 either.

I sort of like just watching the competition. Trying to prove cheating without knowledge is like being obsessed with spotting vaccination marks on Indians in old movies. Just takes time and you miss the movie.

BTW - Anabolic Steroids are somewhat different than medical steroids. With one you use it to help you lift a car and the other one is when it falls on you.
