For the record, (no pun intended) I can't see why artists SHOULDN'T be trying to protect themselves from Piracy in legitimate ways.

God knows if your income was being destroyed by a criminal act you would want to be protected by the authorities....I certainly would. Just because everyone does it, does NOT mean it is or should automatically be deemed "legal" and correct.

The problem is the heavy handed and often quite ridiculous manner in which they go about it....

I also agree that plaigarism is a totally different thing to piracy. There are existing laws and means to recover costs from plaigarism.....not so from piracy.

I'm against piracy, I think musicians have a right to protect their work, and it's currently illegal to download music without paying for it, at least in the USA.

I don't think it's morally right either. All the rationalizations about genies, technology, and sticking it to the man don't make it right. It's still just stealing because you can get away with it.

I know I won't change your mind or anyone else's mind, so I don't see the need to argue the points any further.

Up Front....I'm a huge Led Zep fan

A few of the "blues" tunes, in this "Video Expose", leave no doubt of an earlier version...usually recorded by an older "blues" artist who as likely 'borrowed' all or part from another "blues" artist of that day.

Many of the other "plagiarized/pirated" songs frankly wouldn't stand up in my court of opinion....not even close...with the exception of some very short 2-3 string chord progressions that are very similar by themselves but not in the context of the whole song.

I do believe that many artists, including Led Zep have not given proper due.

But I think the record companies haven't 'owned up' to their role in that because of the money, legal issues

But I'm certain that we Caucasian Americans, in our day, would never have heard of or ever been exposed to 'Race Music' unless the Brits had sought it and brought it back to us. Lots of American artists, in that day, 'laundered' and 'sanitized' lots of songs from black artists simply for the record company's profits. Not sure that any artist then had any say or leverage in that part of the business. Black or White

Your logic also means that anyone who's ever played in a cover band owes somebody some money....you gonna chip in? I'll try to match it.. ;~)

I'm not gonna judge Led Zep or any other 'mega' band on their participation in the 'dirty' music biz or the minutia of every decision they made in their careers. I wasn't there.

I'm gonna simply like or not like their song choice, artistry and performance.

I'm also gonna honor all the artists that have influenced me by playing my Tele, acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo and ukulele right now ! Wanna join me??

"Anyone who's ever played in a cover band" has a legal obligation (in this country) to fill in a Live Performance Return with APRA (Australian Performing Rights Association) so that the songwriter gets some small recompense. And sometimes not so small- my 1990 LPR bought me my 52RI.

Time for a history lesson. Some of the first copyright laws were in Britain before recorded music, yet were passed for sheet music. Seems that some pirates were going to shows, memorizing the tunes, then selling the sheet music cheaper than the real versions.
