.......DANG! The place is crawling with people!

And a lot of rude people at that too!

I love the beauty, majesty, and the regalia of Yosemite, but its gonna be quite a long time till I return to see her.......

is there an "off season"? i'd like to see it sometime myself, but not if there are too many people there to ruin the experience

My stepson lives in Napa Valley and he spends a lot of time hiking and climbing at Yosemite.
He basically says the same thing. There are times when it is quiet but most of the time it is filled with visitors and tourists. He goes into the back country and avoids the crowds.

I saw a couple real cool vids on YT that were of rock slides caught by someone.
Very scary stuff. Doesn't happen very much anymore as they now have employees that climb up the faces of suspicious sites, and they peel off the threatening pieces by bar or by charge.

But it still does happen: http://articles.latimes.com/2008/oct...l/me-yosemite9

Last time I was there I overheard a group bragging about feeding the bears. So really, it is just a matter of time before the situation rectifies itself...

A few years back I was doing some gigs on the west side of the mountain, and it was shorter and quicker to drive through the park to get to the gig. Most of the time there was quite a bit of traffic, except for one time around middle of May. I got up to the Tioga Pass, from the east side, just when they were opening the road for the season. I had to drive behind a snow plow for a few miles, but there was no one else around and it was like I had the whole place to myself.

First and last time I was there a park ranger went for his gun when my 6 month old puppy barked at him. Not a place you want to bring your pets.

When I was a kid we lived in central California for a few years, so we took a couple of day trips to Yosemite. It's really beautiful country there, though I'm wired to enjoy the drive more than the destination.

I remember looking at Half Dome from a meadow and the quality of light and the very slight haze in the air at that moment gave it an aetherial presence, it seemed more like a hologram or an apparition than a mountain.

This was 20 years ago, and I remember there being a moderate crowd, but not teeming with people.

Best in early spring and fall while school is still in. Summer is when it is most crowded in the Yosemite Valley.

I have been in winter and it is spectacular but cold and snowy.

self identification is helpful. If you are a tourist and go in the heart of tourist season as annoying as all those people are... they are YOU.

If you are in good shape and can actually backpack or hike at least 10 miles.. you'll find after about mile 2... the crowd thins (in all ways)

If you aren't obsessed with the 'famous spots' go on to Kings Canyon... even at the height of the summer there are quiet places there....

and just as pretty as yosemite..

one of my neighbors complained about how crowded the gift shop was there... what the heck?

Getbent has said it all.

I go during the shoulder seasons. The crowds are much much smaller, and they're different in character as well. The July tourists and the October tourists are not the same people.

There's a permit system to contend with, but backcountry permits are much easier to obtain in the shoulder months.

you could go to Scottsbluff, NE next trip, and avoid the crowds.

John Muir had the best of it!
It would be awesome to see it as he did. If we only had a time machine.

I visited Yosemite the 3rd week in October, back in 2007. Not crowded at all, got to camp in the valley. Would love to return someday.. but not in the Summer.

Getbent nailed it......... you don't have to walk far, to lose the crowds.

I remember waking at the climbers' camp site one spring morning, with frost on my tent. Ten steamy minutes after the sun came up, it must have already been 70 degrees....fantastic place.

Summer is the worst time for crowds of tourists.
It thins out a lot after school starts back up.

Never realized until now that Yosemite Sam's hat is the same profile as Half Dome!
