I was in college in New Orleans at the time. Definitely stayed up to watch it and the others. I have the New Orleans States Item and Times Picayune papers from that day.

I remember the day very well. The moon landing was big news, but it was also the day when the band I was in won first place in the local "Battle of the Bands." For some reason, to this day the moon landing is far better remembered than my lead to "Midnight Hour!"

Remarkable feat that. Everyone remembers what Armstrong's first words from the moon were. But how many of you remember what Buzz Aldrin's first words were when it was his turn to step out? No fair using the Googles or the twitbook.

We had been camping, had a flat tire on the way out of the hills and finally made it home about 11:00 that night. Watched them bouncing around on the moon via our ancient B&W TV, snow static and all. It was great!

Did they go up at night because it was so near to the Sun?

No, silly. The moon is only there at night. If they flew up there during the day they would've hit the sun. Ouch. :)

Hahaha. That's so much better than what he actually said.

I got the pleasure of shaking Mr. Armstrong's hand one day when I was working on the shuttle, he was a very nice and humble man. One of the highlights of my time there for sure.

Arrived that day at my army unit in Korea, saw the TV on in the NCO club on the main base. The locals working in the club either didn't understand or believe what was going on, I will never forget that.

I was an eight year old kid, but aware of Magellan and the other explorers. I knew I was witnessing history in my lifetime and shed a few tears.

I remember going outside and looking up at the moon thinking: "there are people up there!"

"Watching that was beyond cool."

You can say that again, I'd really, really, like to have a hose like that!

It was in the afternoon here in Oz so I took an extended lunch break and watched it in glorious black & white in the pub over many beers

I remember it well. That was the summer of my sixteenth year. We had just gotten air conditioning and a color TV just a few days before. It doesn't seem like it's been that long but time sure flies by.

I was 11 years old. My parents had to go way out in the country to visit some friends. That meant I had to go and I was distressed to be torn away from the TV.

Those folks; of course, fixed me up and I watched it right along side my father's friend. I; too, remember going outside later, and staring up at the moon in fascination with the thought that there were people up there!

I was 12 or 13. I watched it all on TV. It was pretty amazing at the time.
