I'm just ducking next door for a cup of sugar. Back in 44 years.

A light year is a unit of distance, not time. If you were traveling at the speed of light, it would take you 44 years to make the trip to the planet and back (plus any time you spent there teaching the inhabitants how to grow sugar cane and refine sugar from it).

make sure the neighbour is in...otherwise its another 44 light years to the next one.By then you may as well have called in at the local store nearby and purchased a bag of sugar instead!

I am always skeptical when I hear things like this because I would really love for it to be true.

I fear many of those astronomers also want it to be true so badly that they may incorrectly interperate data. Not purposfully mind you.

It is close to us, but I wonder what they can actually tell about the planet; other that being in the right zone in the solar system, mass, general type of atmosphere, etc. Its all statistics.

Man that would be very cool if true though, hungh?

"twice the size of earth" Does that mean it has twice the amount of gravity? Would a human be able to stand upright on it?

I'm guessing your spaceship would have to be twice as big as needed on Earth to escape it's gravity well?

Physics is not my strong suit.

I'll tell you what, I have a few people to nominate for the maiden trip! Just let me know where to send my nominations for the flight team. Best of luck to 'em! I like it here on "old" Earth just fine!

Not twice the amount; depends on the radius of the planet and the mass. I may have failed at my math but if it's the same density as earth and 2x the mass, gravity should be ~25% more.

I've already told them twice that we don't deliver pizza to their neighborhood and honor the on time guarantee.

Not necessarily. Gravity's force is proportional to the mass of the object, not the size. If the planet in question is made out of, let's say, swamp ash instead of iron/silicon (like Earth) that planet's gravity would be substantially less than that of Earth.

My uncle once went out to buy a packet of cigarettes and didn't come back for 20 years. True story.

Betta check out "Captain Kirk's Guide to Women" 'fore ya go to infinity and beyond.

That dern Kirk liked green womens too. Check the news video in the above link.

They're not clear what they mean by "twice as big," but I took it to mean twice the radius.

If the radius is doubled and the density is the same, then the mass works out to be 8 times Earth's, and the gravity works out to be twice Earth's gravity.

22 light years away.

We could get there in about 20,000 years with current technology.

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

I'm pretty sure I'm not your uncle, but I went out for a pack of smokes one time, and didn't come back for a year. Just my car and the clothes on my back. Drove all night to the next state... Seriously, I did this once... Of course, this was back when I was young, dumb, and single. Now I'm just old dumb and married... And a whole lot more boring!

I'm fairly confident that the entire universe is teeming with life. We've found life in virtually every environment on earth, including inside active volcanoes, in the deepest oceans, miles underground, in the coldest, saltiest, most inhospitable places on earth.

The idea that earth could host life on such a massive scale while the rest of the solar system, galaxy, or universe could be devoid of life makes even less sense than believing that the sun revolves around the earth or that the earth is flat.

It's not going to take anywhere near that long, once we find the stargate.
