Goodbye Amazon.com

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/get-re...on-amazon.html

Quote:
Dear Amazon.

I may be cancelling my Amazon account, sadly enough. This will likely occur when Amazon finally caves in to state blackmail on the taxes issue. (Which looks to happen on Sept 15) I already pay enough in the form of taxes. Also, the sellers of the products I purchase quite possibly have already paid taxes on their inventory, and it seems like everyone is getting double, or even triple taxed on the same products.

Yes, this is a sad day. I have spent thousands of dollars at Amazon.com, and that may be coming to an end, as I turn to Ebay once again, where I am not charged taxes.

Goodbye Amazon. Sorry to see you sell out.

Sincerely,

Sold out in Calif.

Come on, really? You think you should be able to pay no tax on purchases?

Its not really up to them, they are only following the law of the land. Even if they dont charge tax you will still pay for it, they will just up their prices

It is up to them. Amazon is caving in to the state's request to have part of the pie. There's no legal requirement for Amazon to require its sellers to charge tax that I am aware of.

If they have any form of a physical presence (storefront, office, distribution center, etc.) in that state the law does require it.

There will still be plenty of operations to buy from who don't have a presence in certain states or any states at all and that's where the orders will flow if their net prices are less. You'll be able to buy from them instead.

You're legally entitled to arrange your purchases to pay the least amount of sales tax you can just as you're entitled to structure your life to pay the least amount of income taxes or property taxes you can. There is no law against that.

You already pay taxes in one form or another. The sticking point comes in why should California, or any other state Amazon intends to collect sales taxes for, derive the benefit of taxing items not sold in their state?

The way I see it, we are going to be taxed on every single item bought and sold on Amazon.com. Right now, I have Prime for free shipping and cheap 1 day shipping. Add the tax on top of that, and we are right up with brick and mortar store prices.

This was the whole motive. The retailers with physical store fronts fought to have Amazon be required to tax internet purchases. The bottom line is we are already paying huge untold amounts of taxes on everything we buy. In my opinion, it's double jeopardy and outright theft.

I might as well avoid Amazon now. The whole point was the savings. It was a system that worked. It was a good business model.

Here in Arizona we are required to list all online purchases on our state tax returns and pay taxes on those items. NOW California is also charging us taxes for their state on those same items.
I just bought a Yamaha mixing board, and because it was shipped from California, the dealer, in Las Vegas, just told me today that they charged him $560 in taxes and that I have to now pay that. I'm also going to have to pay on my tax returns for Arizona, so now with California's new law I'm paying double taxes on items I buy on line, or any item shipped from the state of California.
The WHOLE idea of sales tax is to create a base for local government, like local schools, police, fire dept, things that help the locals in their community. Yet now because I bought something from Yamaha, over the phone, now I have to give money to Buena Park? I have no intention of ever living in Buena Park and using the schools, police, or any other services that my $560 is going to.

You guys can have the front end for while. The view from that perspective isn't very pretty either but we're paying a premium for it anyway.

They're so helpful. I like the part where they immediately did not answer my concerns. Then at the end..."Did I solve your problem?"

I didn't expect anything. Amazon is just another cog in the Industrial Machine.

Amazon response:

Quote:
Hello, We appreciate your feedback and have forwarded it to the correct team internally. We'll begin collecting California sales taxes no earlier than September 2012 and no later than January 2013 - matching the timing specified in California Assembly Bill 155 (2011).

We'll update our Sales Tax Requirements Help Pages when a specific date is known.

You can visit this page at: www.amazon.com/help/tax/. We hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you for your inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

If yes, please click here...blah blah. If no, please click here...yadda yadda
