So, if I'm understanding this correctly, marriage is like being stuck in quicksand?

You better reach for something to pull yourself out, or you're going to settle.

I would have to say, my wife reached for me. I didn't settle. She has a lot to offer. I'm still not sure how she knew I was worth it?

But, after coming out of a terrible 5 year relationship with a woman (stalker), I was considering never dating again.

I found my best friend, after all these years. I am glad she didn't give up on me.

You know things are terrible, when a woman asks you out, and your reply is simply, "I'm in a bad place, you don't really want to know me."

But, she continued to persue me, gently and slowly. I am here to tell you I am so glad she did! Life is good! And I thank her every day for chasing me down and giving me the time to see who she really is! We've been together over 4 years, and married for almost 2 years.

We married for better or worse. I couldn't do any better and she couldn't do any worse.

I know plenty of couples that seem to be succeeding... each under the private delusion they reached. I just keep quiet.

I don't buy it, how do you judge? There is a web sight with pictures of couples and you vote which party settled. So what is the criteria, simply looks? I know I am more attracted by personality than looks alone.

I don't buy it either. I have always subscribed to the theory that most people find mates on about the same level looks wise and they obviously have to be compatible personality wise. I think it is pretty rare to find a couple where one partner clearly outclasses the other.

Besides we all know very guy here said they reached for fear their wife would read their post.

This assumes each party is across the board superior or inferior. Life doesn't work that way. My wife is "better" than me in some ways. In other ways I am "better". I think we complement each other or at least cover for each other.

I don't know whether my wife and I were looking up for something to reach for, or looking down for something to settle for, or some of each, but whatever we were doing we weren't looking where we were going, and ran smack into each other. I'm pretty sure we both agree that it was a lucky accident.

I settled. She doesn't play the drums.

Luckily, she's gorgeous, smart, funny, and a great mom...so i guess i'll get by.

I had a friend tell me the best thing about his girlfriend was she could touch her tougue to the end of her nose. Some criteria are just not apparent.
