Argh! New Telecaster Arrived!

Yes, the FedEx truck was just here and my new Telecaster has arrived!

My wife bought the new bedroom rig for me for my birthday, including this Tele, and even created a "guitar corner" by the bookcase in our bedroom for me to set up my rig.

So there is now a big box labelled "Fender" sitting here. And my wife, who bought the guitar, amp, effects box, and all the other stuff...

IS IN TOWN, 15 MILES AWAY, GROCERY SHOPPING!

I phoned her and told her it was here and she said, "Well go ahead and open it!"

But I can't. She got me the new Tele, a Tech 21 Trademark 30, a Zoom G5 pedal, a new pair of Sony MDR7506 headphones, a Seymour Duncan Woody for my acoustics, and a pile of new strings for acoustic and electric, a new JJ Electronics 12AX7 Gold Pin tube, and a Vox AC30 amPlug.

I just can't open my birthday stuff without her here after all that.

So I called her on her cell phone and she's still got a few stops to make to complete the shopping.

"I still have to stop at the pharmacy, the movie store, and I want to go back to get some chips and things for the movies."

"C'mon woman! No one needs medicine, we're all healthy! And we just watched a movie the other night! And chips!? Full of sodium and transfats! Very bad!"

"Oh, go ahead and open your stuff, it's OK."

But I'll wait. It will take rarely used inner strength, but she has to be here when I open it after giving me a 54th birthday like this.

So I told her I'd wait for her and she just went, "Awww, honey!"

Must find something to do to distract myself until she gets home. Pacing might help...

Rick

Well played. Everything is a test. Your restraint will be rewarded tenfold.

If I don't go in the living room and look at the box, my hands won't shake like this.

Must stay put at computer desk...

Jeez, it's like being tortured or something!

Those Sony headphones are the best I have had my 7506's since 1993.

You can play music at concert volumes with no breakup or distortion

Sounds like you already have been rewarded. If my wife bought me a rig like that, I would renew my vows on the spot! (Don't get me wrong. I love my wife dearly.)

Wait and share the joy! You've got a keeper!

What your wife is trying to tell you is "I don't really care about all that crap. Just go play and stop calling me every few minutes!"

Yeah, I'd probably be up all night in this situation, too. But the gear might stay in the box until tomorrow.

Ha! Yep, she's home! And she was glad I waited for her. Here it is, along with the other stuff that's come so far:

So I should get the Vox AC30 amPlug tomorrow if all is well at USPS.

The Zoom G5 had a brief backorder, should be here Tuesday.

The Tech 21 Trademark 30 had a little longer back order, should be here the 19th.

First impressions? Feels just like the first old pre-CBS Tele I ever played. The Road Worn look is better than I thought it would be. The thing is resonantly alive in your hands, just like the one I test drove, and it fits the hands like a well worn-in old friend.

Tone is everything I could ask for, it twangs great or settles down and speaks nicely for blues or jazz sounds, and of course it will dial into a very nice classic rock tone.

The workmanship is impressive. I'm a hobbyist luthier, both acoustics and electrics, and I can't find anything to complain about. Everything is as it should be, fret ends, the whole thing.

They do nice work down there in Mexico.

I'll do a setup and after that, I don't think I ever want to set this thing down again.

If I weren't already married, I would ask if she had any sisters just like her!

That's Fender's 307, Vintage Blonde. That color comes with an ash body, which is mostly why I chose it.

The color in real life looks pretty much just like the photos above. If you look at pictures on the Internet, you'll see all sorts of weird shades, but these photos that I've posted show it like it really looks.

Man, I can blaze on this neck! It might be the best neck I ever played. I think my speed doubled. It feels perfect.

The 6105 frets are great as long as you take a reasonable grip and don't try to wring the neck off. Bends are almost too easy with tens. Sheesh, I bought nines as spares.

If you try to strangle it, you can bend out of tune, but if you take a reasonable grip on it, you can fly. This thing was worth the price just for the neck. The rest of it is gravy.

I can still smell the lacquer. I suspect is was still in Mexico not too long ago.

Thus far, it's a steal for the price. HIGHLY recommended.
