Is there a way to enjoy bebop jazz?

I tried for 35 years - still sound like torture to me! After being subjected to around 4-5 minutes of its screetchy, pushy and menacing sounds, I feel like bumping my head hard into walls.

Believe me ....I tried. I closed my eyes to "A Kind of Blue" pretending I was in heaven. I shook my head "knowingly" to Mclaughlin, lying to people & to myself..... where the simple truth was the little baby in me crying for help!!!

Here; I've said it. Excuse me for that - & I'm sure not trolling. I know I must be stupid somewhere... but I feel I took a load off my chest

I enjoy it by pushing play on the CD player, or dropping the needle on the LP.

Not even sure if KOB would be considered bebop....

But hey, if you don't dig it, you don't dig it.

I've found the best way to enjoy bebop, or any music you don't like, is by either
A: a suitable application of ethanol, preferably early enough to blunt the effects of the jazz, or
B: In the company of a well-endowed jazz fan of the gender of your choice that you are pretending to like said music to impress.

Otherwise, the best way to enjoy bebop is to turn it on, then plug in your iPod and rock out to some decent music! I'm not a big bop fan, either. It's like fast chicken pickin'. While I can appreciate the technical prowess involved, the music more often than not leaves me cold.

Enjoy what you like!

I appreciate bebop in much the same way that I appreciate opera or warp speed bluegrass. A lot of hours of practice are required to perform at that level, and a level of discipline to which I personally do not aspire...
I prefer songs.
That said, I have played quite a bit of jazz over the years, from organ trios to big bands, standards to free form. Those checks, though small, cashed just like the ones for playing popular music...it's a mercenary territory.

For me, some kinds of music are more enjoyable at certain times of day. Bop is 3AM - 5AM stuff.

Kind of Blue and John McLaughlin are not really Bebop. Try a Charlie Parker "Best of...". He has a deep connection to the blues...

I can dig Wes Montgomery and Dave Brubeck, but those squeaky horn players are annoying.

I do love "classic" jazz, no problem!! Wes, Charlie Christian, Count Basie, Etta/Sarah/Billie - all day!! I worship Grant Green (I'm not THAT stupid - lool)

It's the "modern" jazz pushing "wrong" harmonies, the stuff that makes peaople want to climb the curtains! Or open my wrist!.. But it ususally ends way more benignly, with a raging tap on the radio/cd player OFF

From what I understand, Kind of Blue was intentionally not Bebop as Miles was bored of it. It's considered Modal Jazz.

Fwiw KoB is one of my favourite albums.

It is a nice album I admit. what I really meant was the crazy stuff with the screetchy sax high pitches, fast free drummin & modal disgruntling.

Sounds more like you don't dig free jazz.

If the saxes are getting screetchy, they're doing it wrong (IMO).

A bit of the jazz cabbage helps.
