Old guys rule - At least in Austin

One reason to go see these guys is because they may not be around forever. Here is a link to win tickets to see Old Merle Haggard - FREE on the 29th in Austin
http://www.kvet.com/cc-common/contes...html?id=189909

Just register and you can win tickets without having to Tweet/Toot/Titter - whatever. Yes you will get emails from the station once in a while. That's because they are letting you know about other FREE stuff you can register for.

Another show this week in Austin by an Old Guy who happens to LIVE in Austin now (go figure).
MEATLOAF - Friday night (tomorrow)

I remember as a kid seeing shows where they would have some old geezer (usually an actor or musician) totter on to stage and everyone would gush and clap and they would show old clips of them when they could actually play or act and weren't some old dried up arthritic husk of their former self. My parents would ohh and aww and I would be waiting for them to usher this ancient relic off the stage so we could watch something interesting.

Anyway, reading threads lately about how incredibly ancient Jagger and McCartney and Dylan and etc. have become got me thinking about how their generation has finally reached irrelavance. We indulge them and still love them but they really are a bunch of old wankers that verge on the pathetic when they "perform".

I mean nobody would really want to see some old, old man "rockin out" if they weren't already famous.

I mean there is the novelty factor like seeing an old fart skateboarding but nobody wants to go see a 70+ skateboard competition. ("Jim, these are some top notch competitors, nobody broke a hip today.").

I know people will post videos of McCartney or Jagger "rockin" to prove how wrong I am. And don't get me wrong, I love these guys. They have brought so much enjoyment to my life it is almost ridiculous. But they are OLD. It is embarassing to see McCartney (who is 70) singing "Well she's was just seventeen..." not to mention creepy.

I guess I'm just feeling old and realizing that my generation's day has come and is now on the way out the door. Which is as it should be but it still is...(sad, humbling, depressing???). I think my generation (baby boom) still has something to offer just not in pop culture. (management skills?, fertilizer?)

I think they need to hang it up or do something totally different. McCartney and Jagger and the rest of that generation are frozen in amber. What they are now is not what they were then.

Side note: I don't really care for it but at least Plant doesn't do Zep.
Well said and spot on. Even though I know McCartney or the Jagger are way past their prime, it's nice that they are still with us and are still a joy to see. To me, it's a little like sports, and even though I know Ichiro or Tom Brady are showing their age, there's still an awe in everything they do. If either could be a pro five years from now, that would just as amazing to me as the young guy in the NBA who could score 30 points a game and barely break a sweat.

Come to think of it, just because they weren't 26 years old, nobody ever wanted to see Muddy Water, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Robert Jr. Lockwood or Ray Charles.

While I've only just got Exile and am enjoying it immensely, a lot of the Stones stuff was a product of its time. But - and let's be honest, they haven't turned out anything musically relevant or of any quality, in over 30 years.

Keef I can watch, and just wonder how he's not dead; but clearly the drugs and alcohol are the only things keeping him alive. If any blood got into his alcoholstream his body would probably shut down instantly.

Mick still strutting? It's not a good look anymore.

I think Lemmy can still pull it off with aplomb, but then, silk shirts have never been his thing.

Old bluesmen don't have to stop - they just pull up a chair...

Just remember that what you're saying about us old folks now will one day apply to you. And when you're at that place in time I believe your thinking about age and talent/ability/skill/artistry will have changed 180 degrees. But thanks for stirring the pot. :-)

Just sayin'...

No, let's be honest, they haven't turned out anything that you've liked in that last 30 years. Or are you the guy who actually decides whether something is of good or poor quality?

And frankly, does anybody really care about so-called musical relevance when they pick a CD off their shelf to play on a Saturday afternoon when they just want to hear some rock and roll?
"Hmm, no, not this one. It's not musically relevant. No, not that one either. Hmm, oh, here's a good one, it contributed a new element to recording technology in 1978. The mixing on this one rocks."

Hey, ya know....maybe you're right.

Old guys can't really keep up with the young uns. They're just famous, so that's why they're not boo'd off the stage.

If they were car racers, they'd have to perform and it wouldn't matter if they were famous or not. You never see some old guy winning. You know....like 3 years ago at Lime Rock, in GT1 class in a fully prepped Corvette, Paul Newman winning the class at 81 was just a fluke. Yah, that's it. He's too old to be going 140mph before big bend.

</end sarcasm>

I missed them all and I just missed out on the Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and some great early surf stuff. I so much had the chance to see them but I was more interested in Cheap Trick, Kiss, REO Speedwagon, and Journey. And now, those bands are the old fogeys as, from what I can gather from an interesting show last night (and tonight), kids like Justin Bieber. Hey, one day he and Lady Gaga will be old news for old folks.

The biggest teenie bopper star in my time must have been David Cassidy and I bet most teens today don't even know who he is.

I understand where the op is coming from, but I always remind myself that music is magic and it transcends a lot of things including the age of the performer. At any given moment while you're performing, you're either making magic or you aren't. If you're making magic, it doesn't matter how old you are. If you're not making magic it doesn't matter either.

On a related note, Iggy Pop needs to put on a shirt.

I remember when Jagger turned 30 and an article says he "doesn't look a day past 60".
