Rock and Roll is unforgiving to its practitioners who get old. Not true of other genres. Mississippi John Hurt didn't even get his second wind until the 1960s after recording in the 20s. Jazz, classical - they all love their elders.

But if you're gray, balding, with a paunch in R n R - bring out the hook!

The 'new' replaces the 'old' and then eventually gets 'old' and so on- no divine revelation there. Certainly, there are a lot of people who should seriously consider 'hanging it up' if you will. But if I had to tell someone to "give it up" it would likely be someone like John McCain, not Bob Dylan.

I'm confused about this post, but then I'm 60. Dam now I looked at the " Post Quick Reply or Go Advanced " now I'm completely lost. Did you say McCartney married a 17 year old

Colorado - How old are you?

In the interest of full disclosure, just how old of a curmudgen are you? Part of your rambling (possible attempt at humor?) might just be attributable to senility.

By the way, Ralph Stanley (born February 25, 1927), is playing in Austin, TX tonight and by my calculations he is 85 years old.

are you talking about David Gilmour?
If so maybe you could learn a few tricks from an old monkey
Also to the OP, your comment reflect the fact that you listen to music with your eyes, not your ears

One thing about some of the old survivors like the Stones and Dylan, they are rooted in the blues... and the blues as a genre doesn't discriminate against the old. To the contrary, you can't hardly claim to have lived the blues unless you have a bald patch, a few gold teeth, at least two divorces and enough serious ailments to warrant a nickname (Willie "Old Blind Sumbitch" Johnson).

I think the closer you stay to the blues, the longer your performing life.

Actually could not agree more. These guys hit their "sell-by" date a long time ago, by my lights. Some of the oldsters are still staying fresh, relevant, trying new and different things. (You mentioned Plant, great example). But Jagger, Dylan, McCartney, et al, are just cruising on nostalgia and the earning power of a rapidly shrinking demographic who can afford five hundred dollar tickets to keep the circus rolling.

I don't knock those who want to see it but for me, those guys lost all relevance by the time I hit high school - thirty years ago.

You play for yourself and those people who enjoy what you are doing. If or when no one else enjoys what you do, you will play for yourself.

Just as we all have different tastes in music we have opinions on what is acceptable to us.

What is the point of degrading other people ?

We all do it whether it's telling someone their guitar is ugly or telling someone they are too old to play in public.

I guess your thread really illustrates the folly in it. So you have accomplished something positive in spite of your comments.

Good one.

When I was under 30 I really used to get a kick out of telling the oldsters (over 30) to **** off at most every turn.

Now that I'm over 60 I really get a kick out of telling the youngsters (under 60) to **** off whenever I get a chance, so...

I hope Mick & Keith have another 20 years in them, and at least one more "Exile On Main Street"...

I remember once someone blogged about seeing my band , it was something to the effect of, "just so you know, they are a bunch of old guys". It made me laugh, I thought, yeah, any bunch of kids can rock, it's when you're old and achey and have careers and mortgages and families and you're still doing it, that's when you're HARDCORE

It might become true that popular Boomer performers will fade into obscurity now that the sun is setting on that demographic, but the one's that do probably were more Beiber-like that you might care to admit.

e.g. Boomers talk to me about Tiny Tim when I bring out the ukulele. Everyone else in the world talks about Jake Shimubukura.

[/RANT] Full disclosure: I'm a Gen-X'er so I grew up in the Boomer shadow, and am a bit jaded about that topic. (ya' think?)
