What's with all these stage collapses? We've had large concerts for years without any problems

Toronto Star article with photo.

Wasn't it last year that the stage collapsed in Ottawa at the Cheap Trick concert?

Amazing. Are we building stages out of a new, lightweight, money saving material now? What gives?

I feel bad for the family of the deceased. Guy goes to work, and doesn't come home. I can't imagine the shock and devastation upon hearing the news. Truly awful.

That's exactly what I've been wondering.

My guess is it's subcontracting. A gets contract, subs work to B for a much lower price B hires the cheapest people (least competent) they can find. Seems to be the way stuff gets done these days.

Mjark, I agree. And now the responsibility for this catastrophe gets passed around like a hot potato.

I think that was one of the stages that Radiohead uses for all their outdoor shows. Big Acts may have identical stages so they can have a stage being built at the next show and one at the current show. The U2 stage took 4 days to assemble.

The biggest problem is that these bands are using so much video and line array speakers that the height of these stages are rediculous. Regardless of materials, labor, etc, these are temporary structures. Raising anything to those heights with that kind of weight outdoors where anything can happen is crazy.
