I seem to be able to grow cacti fairly well...

That is pretty. I was similarly surprised to see wild cacti nearby in Lyons, CO which, at 7,000 ft is a 5B. Who knew?

One of my favorite things I've seen in San Antonio so far is the blooming cacti this spring.

We just don't have those in Appalachia.

Although it's not unusual to find cactus in Arizona, it is unusual to find one in the middle of a pine forest at 7000 feet:

Picture was take about 20 miles south of Flagstaff. I would not have seen the cactus plant except for the blooms.
