Lost a good friend today.
Charles Dupuis, one of the last surviving prisoners of the Bataan Death March passed away last night in his sleep. He was 96, and man did he ever pack a lot of living into those nine decades. Soldier, ATF agent, cowboy, actor and all around great person, Charles was one of those people with a razor sharp wit who never used it to cut, but only to bring a smile. I'm glad I had the opportunity to know him.

My sympathies. I am good friends with a man in PA who was a P-51 pilot with the 352nd FG, Eighth Air Force. He's going to be 91 on June 21 and is losing his memory as well as his physical abilities. The last time I saw him, he wasn't sure who I was. It was sad. I dread the day I get the phone call, if you know what I mean.
Please be very kind to all the remaining WWII vets and thank them for their service. There are very few left. Last edited by DrumBob; June 16th, 2012 at 12:34 AM. |

One of the Bataan survivors used to come to the local VFW in St. Cloud, MN every time we played there. I feel myself very fortunate to have known him and to have heard some of his stories of the experience.
My sympathies to you. |

But I also envy Justin for having gotten to spend some time to get to know him. I lost my best WWII contact back in 2007, but I spent a lot of time the last couple years because I realized how much he had to teach me and all I had to do was cook breakfast and mostly listen. |

Condolences on your loss. A hero, and led a good life after WWII.
Impossible to realize what those men through - realizing there was no relief, no food, no ammunition, fighting a superior force. Then being marched under those terrible conditions, surviving the transport ship trip to Japan - no water, food, in hot airless holds - some of which were sunk by Allied naval forces. Then, after all that, being worked to death and starved. |

Mel Serra was another death march 'veteran'.
We attended the same church for many years. One night this quiet Filipino gent gave a 'short presentation' to the men's group, modestly describing his gig as a cook in the Navy, how things went really badly one day on his ship and what happened next. Words fail. Mel was never a bragger and if I hadn't attended that night I never would have known until I read one sentence in his obit. He was so many More Things than just a survivor of that time in history, but we'd probably be living different lives today if it wasn't for the dedication & service given by Mel and your friend, and their brothers and sisters in arms. My sympathies. Peace - Deeve |

My sympathies. I'm glad that you were privileged to know such a fine person.
Rest in peace, Mr. Dupuis.

Justin, a full life that was well lived after WWII.
I agree with Tom Brokaw - The Greatest Generation. Thank God we had those Men and Women on our side.
