Drummer just quit via text message

Our drummer of almost 3 years quit last night via text message right before he was supposed to show up for rehearsal. We had to scramble to find a last minute fill in for 2 shows today and an out of state gig Saturday. We found a fill in drummer for all three shows who was also nice enough to make it to practice last night in his absence.

Drummers are famous for their bad timing.

Snare, snare, crash cymbal. Enjoy the veal.

At least you found a fill in. My band didn't have one for almost a year.

Gives a new meaning to the term "phoned it in."

You could always do like The Kills, and use a drum machine. But if you want to play with real live people, you have to deal with their real live crap. It sucks but that's life.

A band of mine opened up for the Kills once. They flew in from overseas just to do this one gig at a crappy little bar.

Anyway, to the OP, your ex-drummer's a dink.

Our drummer is good, but he often slows down in a song, or he forgets the break, or he forgets the ending, or he overplays the fill. He's a great guy, and mostly does a great job, but there are some flaws. However, we'll never replace him because drummers are damned hard to find around here.

Sounds like he needs to make a metronome his new best friend

You can never be a great guitar player unless you are with a top notch drummer. And true; these have a really difficult character - but it is the price to pay - & I'm willing to pay it. I learned - as a bandleader & guitrist - to switch off my ego, & accept things ..just to keep an exceptional drummer. I was told this lesson first hand, by the Bluesmen I backed, or opened for.. "It is Ted Curry who gave BB King his style" - never will I forget this lesson. ...No GREAT drummer? Don't play.

He missed practice last week and just didn't show up to our gig Saturday (we had to borrow the opening bands drummer). Then he apologized profusely for it and said he would get his stuff together. After all that he waits until the last moment to bail. I almost feel like he was waiting until the last possible moment to try and screw us over (not sure why). We are opening for a national act tonight and the out of town show is a decently large festival so these are pretty important shows for us. I think the thing that bothers me the most is that he is always calling himself a professional.

I absolutely dread having to find another drummer and weed through all the craigslist flakes and weirdos.

Not very polite . .

When i quit a band, i give them enough time to find someone new and play all the gigs i have acknowledged . . just my sense of decency.

Thinking back on all the drummer drama I've suffered through the years, with guys bailing at the last minute and scrambling to find replacements, I think I'll sell my guitars and become a drummer. Sure, I'll suck, but at least I know I'll show up for the gig!

Good luck on the gigs, Chubs!

kelnet,

Just out of curiosity, what is it that he's "good" at?

yeah those are all what we like to call 'signals' that something is way wrong.

ask around who has the best and most reliable drummer... then steal him/her.

That's definitely a lame and immature way to handle things. Always have the respect to say things like that face to face. I say good riddance probably. I say probably because I've never met the guy .
