Smokers who hate smoking...

I've been a smoker for almost 15 years now and for about the past 5 years I've wanted to give up. I've had so many failed attempts to quit lately that I've given up on giving up.

Then, on my way to pick up my new tele, a stranger I met at the train station let me have a go on his e-cig. I won't tell you the brand for fear of breaking any forum rules but it was a leading one.

These things are amazing! You get your nicotine, the feel of smoke in your throat and simulated smoke made of water vapour to breathe out!

It must be a million times better for your health*, there's no tar or CO2 and you can use it ANYWHERE - the bus, cinema, school, restaurant, church (if you're into that) because nothing is actually burning.

They are pretty expensive, I've got a starter pack on the way which was over £20 but I only really need a puff now and then to stop the cravings so it should last a while. A good way to 'wean' myself off nicotine.

I don't work for any ecig company, I'm long term unemployed. I just think these things are great.

Anyone else tried them?

*allegedly

I stopped, cold turkey, 14 years ago after smoking for 27 years.

Whatever gets you there is good.

Cold turkey (worked for me), or the 3 stages of patch works for some. Walgreen in the U.S. has generic patches, and they are pricey, too.

I quit for over 10 years. Then I got divorced, and have been smoking ever since. But, during those 10 years, I was NOT one of those new NON-smokers that didn't get along with my old smoker friends. Matter of fact, I spent an entire winter in a truck with a guy who chain-smoked. It never bothered me a bit.

But, now I would like to quit (again), and stop for good. Two things bother me.

1. Most people who quit, show up with cancer within 5 years. So, do I quit and fight cancer? OR, do I go on smoking, then pop up with cancer?

2. As I age, I noticed when I go without a smoke, I tend to get tired and yawn? Not sure what this is, or why it happens. I remember 15 years ago, while I was a NON-smoker, I yawned all the time. I wonder if it's connected?

With that said, I will probably make an effort to quit this year. We'll see what happens...

I've been a smoker since I was about 15. So I've been smoking for 16 years.... I hate it and am thinking I'm about ready to really quit. I've gotten to where I truly hate it. I might give the patch or an ecig a try. I could never go cold turkey. I think that might kill me or I might kill someone else. :) thank you for the info.

I hope it works, should get it in a couple of days. I've done cold Turkey many times but always get drunk a month later and start again. If I had something like this it could really help.

It's kind of like something Bruce Willis would have in a sci-fi movie. The end lights up blue when you suck it. I guess it fulfills my need for nicotine and gadgets.

I stopped cold turkey -- right after the heart attack, and the quadruple bypass surgery. I was actually way more afraid of the quitting than the surgery.

The damage is already done, you might as well keep smoking? I've read many times that the risk of heart attack is halved 24 hours after stopping.

I think that's because nicotine is a mild stimulant. Whenever I stop I find that I sleep so much better.

Jees, I realise I must sound like a salesman here. But I really do HATE smoking and am desperate for a way out. .

If you want to quit as you think you should you are on to a loser. If you really don't like it any more then go cold turkey. Within 3 weeks the craving will go

I think you're right about that.
I started when I was about 8. And I smoked until I was 21.
I did it because I enjoyed it.
I remembered saying "When they get to a dollar a pack I'll quit".
And I did.
About 5 years later I started a new job & started smoking again.
About a year later I quit again.
Then back in 1986 I started working at a job where I was on the road a lot. And I started smoking again because it gave me something to do when I was stuck in traffic.
I finally quit for good in 1997 & haven't picked up another cigarette since.
As much as they cost now I couldn't afford to start again if I wanted to.
But now I live in a row house. And when I have the windows open & someone anywhere on the street is smoking it seems like they're sitting right next to me.

Giving up is actually surprising easy.

Trouble is, starting again is even easier.

This is exactly what I need for those days when the initial rush of extra oxygen and health wears off and you have a bad day, get a bit depressed and start lying to yourself and before you know it you're halfway through a packet of tobacco and you hate yourself. Those days are the real test.

I think if it will work for you then go for it

I've been using vaping products for about three years now. Great for use in non-smoking environments. Some people do use them to quit, by gradually reducing the nicotine level.

If you haven't found it already, this place has an amazing wealth of info on the topic.

I'm surprised I've only recently encountered them. The 'smoke' is quite realistic - do you get many people telling you to put it out?

Thanks for the link!
