What hae you been smoking ?

1. Most people who quit, show up with cancer within 5 years. So, do I quit and fight cancer? OR, do I go on smoking, then pop up with cancer?

Where do you get your info from?

Thanks for the link!
If I'm in a grocery store or suchlike, I use the "stealth vape"-- hold the vapor in for a bit and almost nothing is expelled. Got away with doing that while on jury duty! :)

just this past week, i was talking to a therapist who highly recommended chantix. i'm planning to try it next month, when i can take off 2 weeks from work.

to anybody debating quitting, one thing to consider is the fact that after you quit, you will have more money for what's important in life - buying guitars.

ScottieHotRod-- I'll tell you how I quit. The first thing I did was to ask myself "what good did that cigarette just do me?" as I put it out. Being the only person I cannot lie to, I was forced to answer, "nothing". I did that for about six months before I decided to quit cold turkey on Jan. 7, 2007. I have not smoked or used any tobacco product since then.

It took about three weeks to not crave a cigarette constantly, but I did it and will never smoke again. The key to me was that question. You are the only person you can't lie to, so you must be honest with yourself. The only honest answer to that question is "nothing".

If you succeed in quitting, you'll feel better almost immediately. Quitting smoking was one of the best things I ever did for myself.

I hate cigarettes and never never smoked, but I wish you luck kicking the habit. Whatever it takes, do it. Your body and family will thank you.

And I did.
About 5 years later I started a new job & started smoking again.
About a year later I quit again.
Then back in 1986 I started working at a job where I was on the road a lot. And I started smoking again because it gave me something to do when I was stuck in traffic.
I finally quit for good in 1997 & haven't picked up another cigarette since.
As much as they cost now I couldn't afford to start again if I wanted to.
But now I live in a row house. And when I have the windows open & someone anywhere on the street is smoking it seems like they're sitting right next to me.
back in 2001 myself and a coworker would go for smoke breaks...i was saying i really want to quit smoking...i hated the smell...hated the smell in my house and on my clothes...hated what they cost...was getting that smokers gurgle when i laughed...nasty phlegm...but i then said...but ill miss coming out here and smoking with ya and hanging out and general things smokers do with other smokers while standing out in the freezing cold...and rain and hot hot summer days

one thing he said was...well youre not ready to quit are ya

man did that change my whole way of thinking...he was right i wasnt 100% ready to quit

soon after i got poison ivy and went to the doc...he listened to my chest with the stethoscope and he asked
do you smoke
i said yes
he said better quit

i did soon after...scared the crap out of me to say the least...so now its 8 years later...smoke free

My sentiments in a nutshell. At least if you're using an electronic thingy, not everybody else in your vicinity gets exposed to the multitude of awful chemicals in second hand smoke. I swear; call the cops and say there's a a dude downtown spreading cyanide, formaldehyde, benzine and carbon monoxide in a gas that everybody in a 50 foot circle is breathing in, it gets called terrorism, but add a giant tobacco corporate interest to the equation and it becomes a matter of "personal freedom". Good trick, that.

Did I mention that I hate smoking? I didn't forget that part, dd I?

@ Max Twang - Because serveral people whom I've know over the last 30+ years have passed after they have quit and then were diagnosed with cancer. Thats why I know, or at least suspect this. But, thanks for asking...

Good on you for trying something to help you quit.

Just a note on the e-cigs though. While you don't get the overall cigarette smoke thing, the steam/vapor does have a moderate scent. A friend used them to quit and would use them in the dining area with the other 6 folks around the table. It wasn't crazy stinky, but certainly there was a smell. You might check with surrounding folks before "lighting up". (We as a group are non-smokers so we may be better able to smell the exhaust.)

Good luck.

Carl

I'm cig-free for 10 weeks now. Started out using an oral tobacco pouch called "snus" (not a brand name) and weaned myself off of that.

Now I don't have any vices left. :(

I quit 5 years ago, cold turkey. Almost all the people I know that quit were only successful cold turkey.
I tried several times to quit but it never worked until I was ready. I knew I was ready when 6 months after I quit for the last time, my dad died. I knew I could start again and nobody would give me grief about it. I didn't. It made me realize that if you really want to, you can. When you're not ready, you look for an excuse to start again.
I also went and got a chest X-ray and physical right after I quit, I had been smoking 18 years and everything came up looking good. It reassured me that if by quitting, I could be dodging a bullet.

Cold turkey is the only way, luck helps. Since I play music in a bar that allows smoking and our 85 year piano player smokes on stage(!), it hard to escape the fumes.

But for me, I quit one day in the early 70s, I'd had enough. One trick that worked for me, don't throw the cigs away, I had a pack around for a couple years. There's that whole procurement procedure that's part of the addiction, in a strange way it helped.

I'll be 83 years old in a few days, and I'm ashamed to say it but I don't remember my first smoke..I do know that I've been a steady smokers sinch I was 14 years old.(had my own money then)..
I've quit 2 times..Once for 3 months..I did a gradual cut back untill I didn't want them anymore..Started again untill my heart surgery..Lasted less than 3 weeks off the damn things..
Now I'm goin g to do it again..This time for good..
I made 2 promises to muself, lose at least 40 lbs and quit smoking..I've lost 30 lbs so far and doing very well with it..
Because I don't multi-task, I'm saving the non-smoking task till I lose 10 more..I know for sure that it's gonna happen..I've already cut down..I'm not one to give up once I've decided to do something..
As to those e-cigs, I have some but they arn't quite the same..BTW.You can buy the liquid to re-fill the tips and save a bunch of money..
Good luck to all who are quitting...

Good luck. I don't want to ever start smoking. The price of it is enormous, healthwise and pricewise. I always start coughing like crazy whenever I smell cigarette smoke.

Cold turkey, 1 week was what it took. Video games and chips.

Now, I CAN'T STAND secondhand smoke. Abhor it.

I do like cigars still. Kinda hypocrite yeah.

Good luck on those e-cigs! Hope they help.

Even when I used to smoke I couldn't stand secondhand cigarette smoke.
The smell of a good cigar or pipe is a different story.
It's been over twenty years since my last cigarette but godallmighty I miss tobacco.

I quit skoal four months ago.My insurance has a program that pays for the supplies.I found it helpfull that they call you once a week to check on your progress. They gave me patches and nico gum.The patches seemed to help alot as you wear them 24 hours a day, keeps the level of nicotene constant in the system, and the gum gives you something to put in your mouth to relplace packing the lip all day long.Good luck to you, hope you find a method that works.
