He'll always be Chett to me.

I liked it so far. Looking forward to it tonight.

It seemed ok to me, the wife loved it.

I just get a little cranky about ersatz history on the History Channel. I guess if they can pawn off Pawn Stars as having some historical elements, the Hatfield and McCoy's qualify too. Its all about selling advertising.

Didn't the Flintstones cover this storyline years ago?

It is by far the most advertised show the History channel has ever done! I did watch it and I thought it was good. Will be watching again tonight.

They're replaying the old episodes followed by the new episodes tonight and tomorrow night. I'm sure that it will be repeated again and again...I haven't watched the first episode yet. I have it on the DVR though...

I absolutely loved the show. A very good narrative of the situation so far.

I don't know how many of you guys caught this, but last night before the show, a guy on Pawn Stars came in claiming that he had a gun that was used by Cap Hatfield.
They didn't buy it, but there is a picture of him holding what appears to be a 1892 Winchester.
The other thing was the timing of the episode. Does anyone think that they put this piece on last night to hype interest in the show?

Probably due to Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton. They probably had to lay out some dough to get the series. Costner don't come cheap, and neither does Paxton.

Prior to watching the show, I read an abbreviated history of the feud, and it appears to me that they followed the sequence of events pretty closely, although I'm sure a lot of dramatic license was taken. I enjoyed it. As to Costner being expensive, he's one of the producers, so he basically hired himself. I'm sure that, in additioin to a salary, he's getting a pretty good chunk of the other action, residuals, DVD sales, merchandise, etc.

Costner produced. His payday is assured!

I liked it okay. I lived in eastern Kentucky for 5 years and knew a really good harp blowing Hatfield... I learned a lot about the folks there during that time and have a deep fondness for the area and the people... if you are of a mind to read a book... Harry Caudill's "Night Comes to the Cumberlands" is a great read. Harry was quite a guy... and if you want to read a wonderful novel "The thread that runs so true" by the late great Jesse Stuart (kind of the Doc Watson of teaching) changed my life (for the better)

I'll watch the show because I'll watch pretty much anything about that area... I"m not expecting it to be perfect.... but, the song the guy was singing just before he got killed was worth the price of admission for me!

I have been looking forward to it but found it a bit flat. I'll watch the remaining episodes anyway, but I'm not as enthusiastic about it as I was the other day.

I don't think it really says anything about how touchy people were or weren't back then. I think it more shows what some modern writers decided to depict, from their own imagination - with an emphasis more on making the scenes witty, surprising, efficient, clear and dramatic, rather than accurately depicting how touchy the public was (which they really wouldn't know anything about).

When the audience forgets all of that and just believes it, then the writers and actors did a good job.

I read somewhere and I can't find it, that Hatfields & McCoys productions was owned by Costner and History Channel bought the rights.
I know for sure they filmed the majority of the series in Romania.

Costner's film salaries are all in the millions so I don't know, but I would bet he is getting paid pretty well, whichever pocket it comes out of.

My point exactly. I'm sure his money was in the bank a long time ago. By the way garyt, which bayou are you on?

You American folks get this show three days in a row? Us Canadians have to wait for three weeks. I might have to look for it online so I don't have to wait. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the first part.

I think the part that amazes me is that so far they've show events, that in real life, took place over a period of 25 years. Yet Jim Vance still has the same dog and no one is aging. That must have been some magical valley!

I hope they show it over here. The Hatfield and McCoy feud always interested me.

I was looking around for information about this mini-series and found this site:

http://www.wvculture.org/history/cri...unishment.html

It has articles about the feud going back to the 1800's. They also have all kinds of photos and information about the characters and their role in the Feud.
The history channel's version kind of favors the Hatfields but reading some of the news clippings it seems that this is not all that accurate.

I was really struck by how tall all of these guys were. I mean without the Winchester's they could have had a pretty good B-ball team.
