Unexpected NCD(New Computer Day)

Picked up a Dell Inspiron 6400(Core duo, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB SATA HDD, ATI-x1300 video, 15.4" screen) for $20 this past Saturday as the previous owner had issues turning it on and sold it off as parts.

Turned out the only thing wrong with the machine was a botched up upgraded installation of Vista Ultimate and a dead power cord. Regarding the latter, it turned out the Inspiron 6400 used the exact same power cord as my D610 Latitudes so I popped one of those on the 6400 and the machine booted into Vista.

What's more surprising was after doing a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate, it performed much better.....even the overall Windows Experience Index was much better....a 3.1(Win 7) vs 2.0 (Vista).

Going to have much fun tinkering with it....especially considering the extreme low cost.

99.99% of all computers use that same power cord and its even the same one that you find on a lot of guitar amps these days.

Keep your eyes open at swap meets and junk shops for the power cord for a server.

They can be as long as 12' with an angle connector and come in VERY handy for amps!

Thats a good deal, however, I am a devoted Apple/Mac fan.

I just bought an iBook G4 on eBay for $135 (1.33 GHz PowerPC G4, 1.5 GB RAM, 60 GB HD, OS X 10.5 Leopard).

It's 7 years old, but in my experiences, those blow away PC netbooks and quite a few lower to mid-range PCs, not just for sheer ease of use, but for performance, as well. Compatibility is terrible, oh well.

I should get it Wednesday-Friday.

As soon as I sell my Harmony H306A amp, I'll be getting a slightly newer one.

Incidentally, I recently upgraded my mother's Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard because her online bank apps no longer worked after they upgraded their website. Many other folks I knew are moving to Snow Leopard or Lion due to similar issues with compatibility with newer software or website applications.

There's no way I can build a PC for $20. The cost of RAM alone at the cheapest cost would match/exceed that amount.
