Where have you been?

inspired by the thread 'Where will you go?' i thought to ask Where have you been?

literally write the places you have been that have left you with that feeling that you have found something incredible.

for me it would have to be either the Scottish highlands or the Pfalz region of Germany.

Climbing took me to some amazing places:
1. Aguille du Midi - Chamonix, French Alps.
2. Sennen Cove, Cornwall, UK
3. The Lost Valley, Glen Coe, Scotland

I've traveled in 14 states of the Union, but I've lived in more than half a dozen towns in Texas, and traveled all over the Lone Star State. I guess "incredible" is subject to definition, but anywhere in Texas for me is memorable.

I lived in Lubbock, Texas, where I got a taste firsthand of what the Dust Bowl was like. My wife and I had to pack bath towels around the window and door sills to keep the red dust from coming into our home. I've seen it rain mud and snow red dirt in Lubbock.

In South Texas (Mathis & Corpus Christi) I've seen the power of hurricanes firsthand (also saw their effects while living in San Juan, Puerto Rico).

Speaking of Puerto Rico, it was a great place to spend five of my childhood/grade school years. I loved the beaches (especially Mar Chiquita)...

...and playing all over the old fort El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro), in old San Juan: the garitas (sentry stations), the cannons and stack of cannonballs, etc.

I've also traveled in Europe, and in the Pacific Rim, and lived in Papua New Guinea, but since my wife's getting supper on the table, I'll save that trip down memory lane for another time.

Well, I travel a lot for work, so mostly the most amazing thing has been the airport when it's time to come home! I live in PA. I've been to the beaches of NJ, Delaware, Florida. I've also been to Vermont, Nevada ( Reno and Vegas) south Carolina, Georgia, California, Washington dc and Texas. Washington was probably my favorite. Every morning I would run down Pennsylvania ave to the white house, then turn around and run back to my hotel.

I have been very fortunate to have been able to travel a lot.

In the air force I traveled all over the world; including Europe, The Middle East, South America, Japan, South East Asia, and Africa. Besides Vietnam, the most interesting places were Berlin in the 60's and Africa in support of several Gemini space flights. On one Gemini Mission we went from Libya the length of Africa to Johannesburg and finally to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. In Libya we got to fly over the Roman Ruins at Leptis Magma.

In my work, I've travelled to China, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, South America, Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

The most interesting place of all has been China. The Great Wall, The Underground Army in Xian' and going down the Li' River in Quilin were awfully amazing. I was very lucky to have first visited China in early 1979 and I was able to bring my wife to visit and travel around China with me several times.

Kentucky - Natural Bridge State Park / Daniel Boone National Forest / inside Mammoth Cave

Rome and Florence. 100% of both cities.

Guanajuato Mexico (the city)

Snowboarding the bowls at the peak of Blackcomb, well above the timber line, then hitting the pancake shack.

North Haven and Vinalhaven islands, and sailing between them, off the southern Maine coast.

The St. Paul side of the mississippi river coast between ford parkway and marshall.

London, NYC, and Washington DC have all made me feel this way... but in a bright-lights-big-city party all night kind of way.

I've never been east of Colorado in my life, grew up on the west coast and have traveled around the west quite a bit, married a girl from Alaska so have been up there several times. We go back and forth to the island of Hawaii and try to spend part of the year there, part time residents. I've lived in the Sawtooth range area Idaho and spent enough time in Alaska so I'm kind of over the cold climate thing. Love the tropics.

Machu Picchu is a pretty amazing place, especially if you hike in.

I would like to spend more time on the the west coast of Scotland island hopping.

In the states I think Glacier National Park is a special place.

Everest Base Camp - Nepal.
My whole trip to Nepal was incredible and life changing in so many ways, but, actually standing at base camp, looking across the Khumbu Glacier (with helicopter wreckage strewn across it ! ) and up the ice-fall towards the peak of Everest was quite surreal !

I gots no pictures.

But... Shore Acres State Park (and the majority of the US Pacific coast, actually), Golden and Silver falls, Mesa Verde, Yellowstone, Arches Natl. Park, Devil's Tower, Dinosaur Natl. Monument, Zion Natl. Park, a barbecue place on I-45 somewhere, and Santiago de Compostela (yes, I left the country!) would all make the list. I'm sure there are lots of others if I had the chance to think about it... I guess maybe my threshold for awe is lower than some.

I used to travel a lot in my younger days. In 1987 I took a bus from Pakistan to Xinjiang in China on the Karakorum Highway, over the 15,400ft Khunjerab Pass. I'll have to scan some photos!

There's a lot of world out there. A few highlights...

Sailing the coast of Alaska in the late spring, first cruise ship of the year, when the snow was still low but the weather was turning gold.

Some beach in Hawaii... I have no idea what it was called, but it was a clear green once I got off the rocks, and I got to swim with turtles, mantas, and dolphins.

Scotland is great and I'd go back anytime. How come no one's mentioned Ireland?

Oh, and I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari.
