The "elitist" attitude.
A friend of mine is learning to play bass. We have been working up a small set so he can sit in with the band next time we play.
I recomended he get some heroes ear plugs and told him it's a good idea to use protection any time you play with a drummer. Yesterday at practice he tells me he went to the music store and the salesman told him he should "turn down and learn how to play". Now let me be clear about this...the band I play in is too loud. I play bass with my father and his drummer. They are in their 50's and were rockin' in the 70's, 80's and 90's before the band "retired". I wish we would turn down but it aint gonna happen (old dogs/ new tricks thing I suppose). So I fully understand and agree with the salesman's point, but is that the kind of thing you tell someone who comes in to buy hearing protection? BTW...I have a hunch my half deaf, hybrid picking extraordinaire of a father could more than likely play circles around around most any "elitist salesman". End Rant.

Half-deaf, eh?
To me, it would be how the salesman said it. Hearing is important!

Take it for what it was - sound advice.

"Half-deaf, eh?"
Yup. Too many years of rockin' the honky-tonks without protection. I hear that's just how most bands did things then. I'm not defending that sort of recklesness with ones hearing although I do think loud volumes are apropriate depending on were you're playing. And yes, my friend did get the plugs. I'm sure it went something like, " &%#@ off! I play like crap. Now ring me up." Knowing him.

I think it's probably good advice considering that these days good overdrive sounds can be had a lower volumes quiet easily.
I know that louder isn't always better and that practicing with really loud players is especially annoying. Also, I don't think anyone cares about loosing out on a sale of ear plugs. |

It doesn't sound elitist.. it sounds snobby and judgemental and not helpful and a poor sales strategy. I try really hard to not ask advice from people who I don't respect.
In this case, your buddy needs to qualify the salesman before he entertains his nonsense. I will admit that if I needed hearing protection while playing in a small club, I might save the money and adjust the volume... but, hearos are good for their intended purpose... who knows, if I was playing Robin Trower tunes..... maybe...

No Cooth, salesman or not. You do not disparage the customer..
I am sure in the sales biz you get folks from 5 to 90... If someone cant play on the drums, you tell them not to. if someone should not crank it up, you tell them not to. (store policy) Even if it's Joe Satriani

Won't mention any names, but certain music stores should give you a set of earplugs as you walk in the door.

How the hell does "elitist" even enter into it? That's a weird judgement to make it seems to me.
![]() I guess that makes me and anyone else who enjoys good hearing some sort of a snob.
