Baseball Glove Wrapped & Ready
To continue with my boring threads on Cooperstown and Air Vent pants: I realized when I got back form the road trip that I ain't had a 'name brand' ball glove for about 45 years. Small thing as I doubt I'll ever see the playing side of a ball diamond but WTH so went to the two big box sporting goods places here & try on/throw a baseball into about seven hundred gloves. Learned very quickly:
1) Go small. My hands ain't huge, this is baseball. Giant 14" gloves are for the big ball. 2) The gloves I loved were $100+ and sometimes +++. So after two hours of obsession got a Rawlings on sale + on sale again for $32 and oiled/wrapped it and she's waiting for some action. |

If we were in the same town I'd play catch with you anytime you want! I love the game!!
..in other baseball news.... I'm a proud Papa tonight. My son was used to being the 'ace' of his LL teams (if there is one).. but this year has been kind of a struggle. He broke his left elbow in football and his arm can't straighten and he cant turn his wrist. It may require another surgery. His fielding hasn't been so good, and the coach seems to have soured on him and really hasn't even pitched him much this year. He throws right handed so his left elbow has nothing to do with his pitching anyhow.. Tonight he got his first start and held the opposing team to 2 runs. Even better than that, he struck out a kid that has picked in him a bit in school...and he turned a double play by catching a line drive come-backer and doubled off the runner. Way to go son!!! |

Understand completely about the prices of U.S. made Rawlings these days, crazy. I'll never live down the Cal Ripken sig I had from Jr. high through H.S....... 'Lost' it at college at a pickup game, grrrrr. Favorite glove I ever had.......

SRSLY?
When you get a new glove, you oil it up, put a ball in the pocket, and wrap it up to get it to conform to the ball. After which, any baseball that comes within 3 feet of the glove will automatically be sucked in.

I've never been able to break a glove in like I like. The last glove I had the leather kinda crapped out on me, it was a Rawlings, I maybe over-oiled it. It is still useable, but it just never got that buttery smooth action, even after about 3 years of use. I have permanently borrowed a buddies TPS glove and that thing is great, its got a nice floppy feel to it, my Rawlings bends at the "hinge" and that is it.

Musings on new baseball gloves and some other stuff: I played so much softball that I wore one first basemam's mitt out. Had to get another one. Had a guy on one of my teams who could throw a softball close to 100 mph. It took him about three throws to break my new glove in. This glove is so big, I once used it to throw the baseball with my neighbor kid--I'd catch it and the ball would pop out of the glove. Great for softball, not so great for a baseball!.
In 1964 Richmond had the Yankees' AAA team. The Yanks came and played an exhibition here and I got my glove autographed by all the Yankee greats--Mantle, Maris, Pepitone, Tresh, Ford, Bouton, etc. It was my daily user, so when the autographs faded out, I just redid 'em. I lost that glove. I wonder how much it would be worth today had I not used it again and not lost it... Stubee--I'll play catch with you any time! Just gimme a holler! |

When I was a kid, never did the wrap thing. But I would oil it up--with MOTOR OIL (?!)--and put it on my left hand and repeatedly throw a baseball into it with my right hand for what seems like hours at a time.

It's really not too bad for new. Hinge ain't too bad if I don't try to force my hand way into it & tighten it like a golf glove. I took it out today in the back yard and--in desperation + taking a break from chores--just threw a bunch of short pop-ups up myself and caught 'em. Hard to do with things to trip over in my yard...but it sure feels better than my old glove. Softer, pretty nice...but new. I just got this to play catch, really, as I doubt I could even hit a well thrown pitch anymore but may take it to a batting cage for a few rounds of "throw me a hard pitch and I'll catch it" to break it in or break my jaw. |
