Musician's Friend : "Hand-selected" an option ?

Didn't I read here one time that if you order something by phone from MF that if you specify "you want a light" or "you want a good one" they'll go through a couple or six guitars of the same model and find you one that meets your wants/needs ?

Is this true or do I need another trip to the nervous hospital ?

I want a J Mascis Squier but I want a guitar not kindling...

IDK about that one, but on the Sweetwater site, you can look at the actual guitar by serial number.

Wonder if they have a J M though ??

How do you teenage textaholics decide which words to abbreviate?

"I dont know" doesnt seem any harder than spelling Sweetwater!

Would you really trust some yahoo at MF to "hand select" anything anyhow? To me, those words mean nothing unless I'm doing it myself. I can see it now, guy sitting at his desk, shuffling papers, making box noises, saying "oh yeah, this one's a real good one, you're gonna love it!". Meanwhile, all the actual guitars are in a warehouse 500 miles away.

Well no matter where the warehouse is? the guitar is packed and sealed in a box. It used to take me 15 minutes to unload one, remove the packing, get it in tune and dial it a bit... then play a few riffs. If you requested MF to select the best of 3 on hand... I'd say you were asking them to spend an extra hour or more to unpack, play and repack them... oh sure those Musicians are your Friend and they will personally take the time to prove it... yup, all heart those guys.

I often stocked no less than 2 of a model even in my little store. so if you sat down you could handle and play the two and decide which one suited you better... not perfect but I was happy to do it. Coiurse one of the reasons I quit and sold out was because it got to be such a drag doing a demo for a guitar and then the fella leaves sheepishly. He comes back in 2 weeks to see if I know why? the guitar he got in the mail is buzzing at the 12th... and could I take a minute to just tweak it a bit. Yup, the customer is always right with a smile. I did often because I had the integrity to feel that the customer valued my help and eventually 16 or 60 he'd decide I was worth being "his" store. To their credit 20-30% of those clients did just that... the other 70% still have a fret buzzing on the high E at the 12th:)

Lighter than two of my kids when they were born. They didn't seem all that heavy to me...

Skaught from Musician's Friend here. We do offer a service through Private Reserve that can help you with setting up a guitar to your liking and picking out the "best" one in the lot. We also offer serial numbered pictures and specifications like weight. You can find more on these instruments here:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/private-reserve

Unfortunately we don't have that ability with every instrument we carry though. However, we feel confident that the condition Fender (Squier) sends the item to us in the box would suit your needs for a new instrument. If you have any instruments you are interested in me taking a look at to see what we could do, please email me at forums@musiciansfriend.com.

Thanks!

If I ever have a guitar that weighs 8 1/2 lbs, it better be black, have been made in '68/'69 and say "Les Paul" on the headstock.

BTW - I was 11 lbs even and my son was 10 lbs 15oz...

I've also requested certain strings and action when ordering from Sweetwater. I wasn't expecting much other than just ballparking it but it was fairly close to what I like. I would order (and have) again from Sweetwater in a second.
