My wife keeps pining for a new vacuum cleaner - she'll try to use it, it won't suck anything up, she puts it away and complains.

I keep going to the (minimal) effort of putting a new bag in it and removing the cat hair from the beater bar, whereupon it works perfectly well.

Learned long ago that the money saved by fixing things is worth the whining I hear about how everything we have is old. Especially when everything we buy new breaks irreparably and the old stuff gets resurrected again. I figure eventually the complaining will diminish.

Yeah, I know. What can I say; I'm an optimist.

That's nothing. I decided to help out and vaccum myself the other day. I did half the house and was thinking that something wasn't quite right. Turns out the adjuster knob on top was set to hose. Man...that sucked.

It worked so much better after putting it on vaccum.

You would give your wife a vacuum for Christmas!

Man you are braver than me, that takes some stones!

Weedeaters and other small-engined tools such as chainsaws, are not able to handle the ethanol in gasoline. It kills them. Find a station that sells non-ethanol gasoline. There are only two in our town, both small off-the-path markets with gas pumps outside. Ask about it at your local saw shop; they'll know.

Always good to have a second one for cleaning the car or even the garage. Just make sure you can get used to being called telleu "two vacuums" telleme.

We have a Dyson DC24 - one of those little uprights with the "ball" swivel thing that's supposed to be so maneuverable, and the cyclone chamber thing that you have to empty out every couple of weeks. My wife did a bunch of research on the internet and concluded that we HAD to have a Dyson. I've learned long ago to go with her on these things, because A) she's the one doing all the research and is therefore armed with enough "facts" about the product to defeat any argument I might make against it, and B) if I say "no way" and we get another brand, any problem that might arise with the vacuum thereafter will forever be my fault. So, off we went to find a Dyson. However, I had misgivings about this thing as soon as I saw it, and it turns out I was right - this is the worst vacuum I've ever had, and since it will probably never break, we're stuck with it. Here, for those who might be considering a Dyson upright, are the problems with the design of this vacuum cleaner:

1) It doesn't work for getting under furniture. The "ball" is too big to fit under a dresser or bed, and the hose attachment doesn't come with a wide floor attachment like other vacuums I've owned - just a tiny little attachment that's meant for corners or something. So, if you want to vacuum under the bed, guess what? You have to move the bed.

2) The hose attachment is just a little too short to reach the top corners of the ceiling/upper walls (and our ceilings aren't all that high). So you have to pick the whole vacuum cleaner up to reach the ceiling, light fixtures, etc.

3) As mentioned before, there's no real floor attachment. This thing is probably great for wall-to-wall carpet, but we have hardwood floors and no rugs. You can turn off the beater brush (and you're supposed to, for wood floors) but the result is that the vacuum is sucking everything in PAST the inert beater brush, which then acts as a sort of screen. Our old vacuum (a canister model) had a rug attachment and a floor attachment, but this thing... it's just not made for wood floors. The beater brush quickly clogs with dust and hair, and then you have to stop and unclog it. And it won't pick up anything bigger than a speck. Here's a list of things this vacuum won't pick up: small scraps of paper, small pieces of cellaphane or thin plastic, scraps of foil, large dust bunnies, little pieces of wood... basically, half the mess our kids make on the floor, I have to pick up by hand before vacuuming, otherwise they get caught in the beater brush and then fall out again.

I really hate this vacuum. Between moving all the furniture and picking up all the little pieces of tissue and whatnot that will clog the thing, vacuuming takes twice as long now as it used to with our old vacuum. The good news is, we're moving, and I think this Dyson is going to fall off the back of the truck somewhere between here and Vermont.

A few months ago my girlfriend begged me to clean the floor in my music room (drums and guitars, the wood shavings get EVERYWHERE, and broken strings never seem to stay in the trash cans). I plug it in, flip the switch, nothin. Girlfriend comes over, plays with it, nothin. I get pissed, go to the store, bought a new 30 dollar bissell, take it home, plug it in in the hallway, worked like a champ. Take it in the music room, plug it in, nothin....the outlet is one of those breaker-types that's usually near a bathroom sink. Push the reset, they both worked. We now have 2 vacuums....

Did you name it Durward? (Sorry--old guy TV joke.)

At least I learned the spelling of the guy's name, assuming the page is correct.

Funny, I've got nearly the same situation today. I'm going to buy a new one in the evening but I want to check what fails in this one. Bag was nearly empty but I noticed that.. my dad put it in last time the way, that hose was not tight with bag so dust goes to vacuum housing. After cleaning it, it sucks like a new :)

You vacuum the ceiling? Now I've already proven I'm not smart, but wouldn't it be easier to use a broom or one of those fuzzy fan dusters on the ceiling and under the dresser and then vacuum it up? Of course I have been the one holding the vacuum up in the air several times before I figured that out.

I'd get a cheap one from target or Wally World and never use the dyson. It my not be very good, but it's got to be mostly better.

Years ago, my wife would go out and by these 3 and 4 hundred dollar vacuums, they were good, but would break down after 2 or 3 years. And she didn't want to take them to get fixed. She eventually realized that she could buy a cheap one every year, and still come out ahead.

So your wife doesn't realize the vacuum isn't working either, eh?

What's her car like when you drive it?
