Just found a new god.... Greg Koch
I've seen him do a few guitar reviews before, though I never though to investigate Greg Koch further. But i'm lurching on youtube, waiting for my BSB telecaster to arrive in the mail, checking out videos of it's likeness... then I came across this
I really like a players player, and i've spent the last two hours going through all the stuff of Greg can find. Anyone that can shred rockabilly at 100 miles an hour (then back it up with Vai style fretboard length arpeggio runs) is a god in my books. Just sayin' |

Ah, the gristleman. Haven't seen him around lately, but he drops in from time to time.
Truly a monster player, and I'm still kicking myself for missing him at the local bluesfest a year or two ago.

Wauwatosa, WI, specifically (Milwaukee County). My town. That vid was recorded at our local town festival a few years back.. An old friend of mine recorded the vid. A friend of mine restaurant (Maxies Southern Comfort) sponsored the stage.
I saw him at NAMM a few years back. I just love his version of goin down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KgB-ECxkG8 He has a son, Dylan, who is about 17. At the Wauwatosa gig, he brought his son up to play drums for a Hendrix song. Let's just say that after that jam, his son had a nice following of females....thanks dad. Greg is once cool dude. Imagine getting a paycheck from Fender & Mel Bay, while still playing what you want and being able to travel the world with your unique style. One really impressive part of Greg is that when he does a clinic, he can take a MIM Tele off the rack with what ever amp and perform just as well as with his primo gear. No offense to MIM teles BTW. |

Greg Koch is my heroe and I've prolly learned more from watching him play over the last 5 years than my 30+ years of playing. He can play almost any type of music too.
He's a freakishly gifted player with the humblest of attitudes for how good he really is. He reminds me of a guitar impersonator because he can play so many different players styles, even the funky ones like Albert Collins, without changing tunings, yet sound just like them. He's really studied all the great players and their styles. If he has a weak point, it's probably the very same thing that makes him such a good interpreter of so many guitarists styles: I'm not sure what his own is and I'm not sure he does either. He would have been a great Saturday Night Live band guy, or the tonight show or something. |

Two thumbs up here !!
Despite what some would make you believe guitar playing is NOT rocket science, a cure for cancer or THE most important thing in life so anyone who can inject a littler humor and burst a balloon or two is OK in my book :)

I get the chance to see him often being that he lives in Wauwatosa (Milwaukee).
I made this video with the FLIP camera at a Fender Clinic at Cascio Music here in town. He speaks as well as he plays guitar. Hearing Greg tell stories on local radio is delightful. Leo Kottke and Greg Koch are two of the best stories tellers that I've every listened to in person. I have lots of respect for Greg. The guy who first built the Luxury Drive and then the Diabolical Gristle Tone Manipulator and then the Gristle King (which is the first two in one box) is Tim Jauernig who lived here for a while and now lives in central WI. I went to school with Tim and played with him for about one year in Wausau. Nice guys. Local heroes.

This looks like it is from a performance in Germany. Well worth the 12:32 to watch it! I just noticed how Gregs band is kinda playing with a polka feeling, which is so Greg Koch!
He throws in his Stairway bit a little Joe Walsh....59 LP?? Waukesha, WI is a few miles down the road. Cool |

He was in these parts about 2 years ago and I got to hang with him a bit before his clinic. Nice guy.
The clinic took place at a music store that has a bunch of music teaching rooms and I was sitting with my friend who teaches guitar there in his little room and Greg walked by so I called him in. I introduced him to my friend (who had a nice 50's LP Junior sitting there that Greg picked up) and they jammed for about 10 minutes. I had my own private show going on. It was fantastic. I highly recommend going to see him.

Good Wisconsin boy.
If you get the book "The Soul of Tone - Celebrating 60 Years of Fender Amps", there is a CD included. It's Greg and a portable sound studio recorded at Dave's Guitar in LaCrosse, WI. Koch plays all the vintage amps though the vintage guitars. He throws in some of his humor too. Great stuff. |

I've been to a couple of his clinics. I came away informed, inspired, and entertained at each one.
He's really well suited for the clinician gigs. Not only does he have world class chops to burn, but he's a very engaging public speaker. And I'll give him bonus points for his wacky sense of humor. And yes, he's a nice guy. Later...
