In restaurants, 20-30%. For a drink in a bar, even if non-alcoholic, a couple of bucks per drink. For deliveries, 30-50%. I was extremely poor until landing a good job at age 43, and I know how much it means to bring in a little extra in income on any given shift. If I get really lousy service and/or food, I still tip at least 20%. When abroad, I tip according to the tradition.

Which is why this thread started out with that story.

20% at restaurants. 5$ on a $15 haircut. $1 on a drive thru tea and a sandwich order, usually $10 to a servce technician that comes to the house.

20% at restaurants, 25% for exceptional service. A buck or two at the bar or coffee shop depending on the order size.

20% for great service

15% for OK service

10% for bad to lousy service

On an occasion or two, I have left no tip if the service was abominable.

20% + bonus if we are drinking and our beverages never seem to be empty.

Sneak up, put a leg behind the knees, and give 'em a tug. If they don't tip over, well, you didn't do it right.

I'm assuming the "tug" is only necessary if you really like 'em.

My general rule for tipping is a flat $20 if the service isn't absolutely terrible. I've slaved for customers in the past and understand customer service. I appreciate someone giving their best and I hope to convey my gratitude.

I tip 20%. However, there is a local place where my wife and I could be considered "regulars" where I tip in the 25-30% range.

I have a 21 year old son, a hard worker, that is a waiter in a sports bar. It is unbelievable how many times he gets stiffed. Just yesterday he waited on a table of 7, for 4 hours, their tab was $89.46. Guess how much his tip was? Just guess...

Correct.

$0.54

Bastards!

I'm a tip-o-holic. I tip everybody all the time, usually quite generously. People who stiff on tips are rodents IMO.

Shaking my head at the concept of a "mandatory" tip.

We have a place like that too... my wife used to work with the GM, and he sometimes comps us a dessert or a couple of drinks, and in general just really takes care of us. Even without that, the wait staff there is very good anyway... we usually tip in the 30% range.

30 quid on a £100 bill? Get lost, no service is that good.

No trying to troll here, but why on earth should the customer be expected to make up the shortfall on an employee's wages? That's nuts.

They earn it by sucking up until you have to tell them to please go away, or you won't get any bloody tip. Yes everything is ****ing fine!

That's what I do in America - I want them to bring out my food, not be my personal slave. It doesn't empower me to know I control their final wage tonight.

I can't stand the "I'll be your waiter tonite, SIIIIR!" all perky and fake.

The job is to bring out plates and remove plates. I'll tip accoring to local custom, but suck up ... and it starts going down. Greasy tip junkies.

I think every young person should work in the service industry for awhile to see what it's like. When you make $2 something an hour you learn how to take care of folks, that's how you make your income.

I have known alot of waitresses, and their biggest complaint is not really the low tips, but the camping that people do after the meals. It takes away from their ability to get more customers to wait on.

So, if I stay for more than 1 hour, I take that into consideration.
