a blast from my past!

many, many years ago (1977) I formed a punk group with some friends. We played a lot around the SF Bay Area, got in lots of trouble, established a hell-raiser reputation, burned our bridges and fled to Europe. The band fell apart but I set down some roots here, married a nice girl and eventually moved to Holland permanently.

Today an old USA friend told me that a live recording of a 1980 performance is being 'broadcast' on an internet radio station. I didn't even know that anyone recorded any of our shows!

I will have to stay up 'til past midnite to hear this, and I wonder how it will sound... we had some great shows, and we had some painfully embarrasing ones too. Drink and drugs in absurd quantities can do that to you...

But to me it is pretty remarkable that such a thing can even happen. Nobody could have guessed back in the 70's. Actually, I'm surprised that I'm still around to hear it.

I had a similar thing happen to me with my first punk band (early 90's)

We didn't pay around that much since we were only teenagers but we did house shows and garages and parties etc.

What we did do was record almost daily. Some of it was 4-track, some of it was karaoke machine and some was me playing guitar over the phone into a karaoke machine while the rest of the band played live.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine approaches me with a tape of this great underground punk band that he FINALLY got a hold of. Sure enough it was us. I don't even have a copy of this stuff, but I guess we were legendary in punk tape trading circles.

yeah, we did a little 45 rpm record... no one would buy it so our singer used to throw them out into the crowd. They are now apparently collectible and trading for several hundred dollars!

@Big John - it was a '68 Strat and a BF Bassman back then !

@Uriah - I want to see that video!

Great story, good memories.

SF Bay Area late 70s, early '80s - that was a fun time and place...Fab Mab, Bottom of the Mark, I_Beam, and the Deaf Club are some venues I recall.

About 3 AM several years ago, listening to local college radio, I heard a tape of a performance we had done - I did not know it even existed. Strange and weird, and brought back lots of memories. Now, along with other things we did, it's available on the net and on YouTube - artifacts. I thiink our group was more sedate than JHundt's, however.

@Slauson Slim - what was your group? I know I asked before but my memory is useless.

that's the one. it's a funny kinda video...

they keep showing a bunch of people in a back-stage environment. All those people are great friends of mine, and one of them played guitar in the group after this recording was made. One of them is Stan the bass-player from Beserkely Records headliners Earthquake. Audrey is now a big-shot at CBS records and Patrick is a star in the Seattle theatre scene. Jeff has an important job at Hewlett Packard, and is now married to the lovely Julie.

and there I am at 0:09 sitting with the group (Jon - that's me!)

thank you! I heard it this morning and was pleasantly surprised - it was a fairly good show for us. 8 songs in 29 minutes and bye-bye!
