Shure Inc.
Back in September or October I asked what would be a good replacement mic. The majority suggested a Shure SM58. I ordered one from MF and received it in November. It worked great until about 6 weeks ago. The mic just stopped working in mid song. BUMMER! I tried the mic on different cords and tried a different mic on those cords as well. Conclusion: the SM58 was dead. I contacted MF since I ordered from them, but they were unable to help because I didn't purchase their GOLDEN COVERAGE. Another bummer. I contacted Shure and they said to return it and they would see what they could do. I mailed the mic to Shure Service. Got a receipt for the shipment in a few days. Then an email saying they were going to replace the mic and I got the replacement about 5 days later. So KUDOS to Shure Inc. for standing behind their product. Now I just hope the replacement lasts longer than the first one did.

I've also never heard of a Shure failing like that. Not that it doesn't happen, but you really don't hear about it. Well, until today...
I remember Shure giving some kind of award to Roger Daltry for his years of using/swinging a 58. When asked why he used Shure, he replied, "Because they're the only mics I can do this to and they still work" at which point he slammed it against the floor a time or 2 and went back on with the interview with the same mic. Years ago I worked for a company that wholesaled high-end A/V equipent and we always specd SM28s or 27s in our bids because they were tough and sounded great. Also great customer service for all of their products. A class act.

If your mic is out of warranty, Shure "repairs" it by charging you $50 and sending a new mic.
What I want to know is how people are denting all the windscreens on their SM58s. They're so strong it seems like you'd have to run it over with a car to damage it. |

1) take microphone off of stand and drop it 2) pick up microphone and throw into a gig bag 3) put in some pedals, cables, can of Finger Ease, car keys into the same gig bag. 4) throw bag into back of car where it hits the amp. Follow these four steps and your SM58 windscreen will look like a potato in no time. |

Here's how...
A friend of mine once witnessed a road crew losing control of a large Anvil case containing s PAIR of Ampeg SVT cabinets. (Ahh, the good old days.). The case fell over and when the dust and noise settled down, they found a mic cable snaking out from underneath. Attached to the end was an SM58 with a smooshed windscreen. The mic worked, though. The SM57 and 58 are two pieces of equipment that make me stop worrying about specs and whether we can get an incremental improvement with something else. Sound? Good. Price? Right. Working? 99.9999% chance the answer is "yes". Good enough for me.

Shure has great customer service. I have an SM 58 I got in the '70's. The foam screan inside the metal ball turned to dust and they sent me a couple of new ones. That mic is still going strong.

What everyone else said. I started working in music stores in 1985. This is the first time anywhere, from anybody, I've heard of a 58 failing.
PS: For those who mentioned an improved 58; the Beta 58 seems just as strong and sounds fantastic. Does cost quite a bit more. |

Sorry to hear about your 58, but glad to hear there was a good solution.
I've had 3 mics in 45 years, that I held on to. All Shure. A PE55, a 545 and a SM57. Still have them and they all still work. I've had others along the line but not for long, those three were the only ones I felt worth keeping. |

After hearing all the good words about the sm58 and how dependable it was you can believe me when I say I was shocked when it just stopped working. But I got a replacement and I hope it last a LOT LONGER than the first. Nice mic BTW, I really like.

Glad to hear your had a good resolution. A 58 may not be the best mic in the world, but you know what you are getting and every sound guy knows how to make them sound good.
And...except for yours, they tend to work forever.

A deceased friend of mine used to be the soundman for Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, David Bowie and several others (name dropping again). He worked for Showco here in Dallas.
He told me that the 57/58 were their only mic of choice unless the artist wanted a specific mic. He said that there were times they literally used them for hammers. Good mics. Good company in my book. WOW! My 4,000th post! |
