Decide what medium you can afford and accommodate.

Solvents or water based , Canvas ,paper, board or other.

Opaque or transparent water colors and a couple nice sable brushes and a sketch book with nice heavy watercolor paper pages like this http://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Wate.../dp/8883705629 is a good go anywhere try painting kit.

But remember I am the guy who suggested gogo boots and sparklers in another thread.)

No, you were right the first time, hannigan. Looking at your suggestions now. What's the difference in opaque water colors and regular?

Watercolors and occasionally I will do some folk art type stuff with whatever paint I have laying around, like house paints or acrylics.

I searched a quick link since my lazyosis is acting up ...

again

I prefer opaque. just buy middle of the road paint at first , some pigments are spendy .

Nice brushes are important for a really enjoyable experience.

So if you were to recommend items to begin one's artistic endeavor, what would you recommend?

Something affordable but solid, you know what I mean?

You're going to get sucked into a weird zone, just like with guitars, amps and pedals. The talent isn't in the paints and brushes. Understanding color, light, shadow and all that can be learned as theory of experienced as practice. If you think you can paint what you see/feel, just do it. Go to an arts/crafts store and get a big pack of all different size/type brushes, some red, yellow and blue paint and figure it out.

See, I like the Zagotta painting, in the link. The lighting and various contrasts are gorgeous.

I see what you're saying.

I tend get frustrated if I go to do something and the format is wrong, if it can't do what I need it to do. That's why I ask I guess.

A good place to start with opaque water colors is to paint a gray scale .
Gives you a good feel of working with the mixing and just needs a brush and two colors .

For the gear, you need to set a budget and and base it on that.

As Bones says any old thing can get you started .

I dislike immensely if bristles fall out, yet was surprised when viewing a Monet that there were several brush bristles stuck in the paint.

I once found a dead bird that hat been flattened and road mummified
glued it to a canvas then glued dried leaves on the canvas and panted over it with cheap acrylic house paint .It was fun to see folks discover the bird in that ...so yesiree, anything goes.
