Had a short ride in the back of a police car tonight
Sadly, perhaps - it did not result in me having a trip to the slammer.
Had a little altercation with an inebriated gent at the local corner where that is not uncommon. Thought his behaviour was a bit over the line (he threatened me vague bodily harm - something to do with a beer bottle) and called him on it. Alas, I was not the first. Or second. Nor third. But, by the time the law came by my way, he appeared to have scarpered. Big City Livin'! Cheers, Geoff

I have had some discussions in and around police cars, in "booking rooms" "cells" and such. It is a good thing, that you only were detained. At some point, you will develop a real aversion to police transportation if you haven't already. Remember there is only one of you, reinforcements are ready, available, and I might add enthusiastically waiting to be summoned. It really is a no win situation. Rin Tin Tin is always ready to join in the conversation, and has a biting comment or two to offer. Just keep in mind, after only a couple of days, live cowards smell much better than dead heros, and have quite a lot more fun! It's not the dying, it's just the continually being dead that's such a drag.

Actually I wasn't detained.
Had the little run -in with drunk dude. Cops were already there (another matter - but they should maybe be pretty much stationed there full time). but they had another thingey. Drunk dude pissed me off so much that I called in on him. The cops came by my place and we had a little drive around the hood together. Listen, I've lived near that corner for 20+ years now. this is nothing new. I've had a dude swing at me cuz I didn't give him change etc. etc. Nothing too serious. And this wasn't either really. But I've got a young dude with a disability,my wife has to go by there on her way to and from work every day. I think my patience has worn thin. And then some. From now on, if it's (borderline) criminal behavior - I'm calling the cops. Full stop. End of the story. (We had a crackhouse across the way for a while - I let waaay too much stuff happen there.) Do I think that calling the cops will magically solve anything? Well,no. But I'm not sure what else to do. I'm fully aware that living downtown in a big city has its issues. Being threatened for sharing space with somebody is not one I'm prepared to give a free pass anymore though. It's a tough call. I realize most of these folks have mental illness (and my family is not immune from this) or other issues that affect this. But, at the end of the day, I still gotta be able to take my kid with me to go to the library or buy groceries. Cheers, Geoff

As a young pup I had three of those free rides & one or two included wearing handcuffs. No violence/mayhem/damage to property or person caused by yours truly, just youthful stupidity & subsequent punishment & chagrin.
I learned years later that the police could do good stuff vs just chasing me. I now kinda like 'em! Geoff it sounds like you did the right thing there for sure. Hope that situation improves. |

I'm still not clear what happened. You got in a fight and called the cops? And the cops showed up at your house three hours later? And drove you around in the back of their car...why? Looking for the other guy?

Sounds like you're facing a lot of challenges..a lot of headwind..
If you believe in your neighborhood, keep making waves and doing what you need to do, even if it means a ride in a cop car every now and then. |

Best to phone it in regardless... if ever the situation deteriorates into a physical one whereby culpability becomes difficult to prove one way or the other, at least your call will be recorded... time, date and all.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Geoff. It bites that you did the right thing but wind up taking the heat for it.
Not for love or money would I live in a city.

I loved living in Chicago for ten years. But you had to put on a layer of psychic protective armor. Eye contact is a weapon, so you had to be careful how you use it. Instead of looking at someone's eyes, you could kept someone at bay by looking an inch to the side of the eyes. It says you're not disrespecting, but are ready for anything.

Just when you need Steven Segal, he's off at a gig.

At least your drunken jackass isn't right next door to you.
I live in a row house & share a wall with mine. This guy is a rabid sports fanatic. And he starts tying one on way before the games start. He's loud & obnoxious yelling at the top of his lungs & stomping his feet, joining in with the crowd chants like he was at the game himself. Luckily he usually passes out before the game's half over. but a couple weeks ago I was watching the Flyers-Penguins game. And so was he. He was his normal loud & obnoxious self until about midway through the 2nd period. Then it got really quiet. The guy had obviously passed out. Then about an hour & a half after the game had ended I hear his front door open & slam. And he staggered out onto the porch & started stomping his feet & yelling at top volume, "Let's go Flyers". He's actually never tried to start a fight with me though. When he sees me he usually acts like we're best buds & calls me "big guy" & stuff like that. But he has a teenage daughter living with him. And some of the stuff I hear him yelling at her is totally inappropriate. So I'm concerned for her sometimes. And there are other issues that have resulted in the cops visiting his house from time to time. I've never called them on him. But I think he thinks I have. And I know that sooner or later we're gonna end up dancing.

Papa, if it seems like he wants to make you dance with him, you should just hit him. 'Cause dancing with another guy you don't even like would probably be awkward.
