As long a human beings are in charge, there will never be true peace.

You say that like actually acknowledging the possibility for conflict creates it.

I'm just merely stating your view that large conflicts aren't occurring right now and will not continue to occur in future is ridiculous.

Deaths in recent years in the DRC are estimated at between 2.5 million and 5 million depending on the agency doing the survey and both figures represent what I think of as major conflicts. That is one country alone, not taking into account the conflicts in neighboring African Countries. Roughly 10,000 people have been killed in Syria in the last year alone. You can stick your head in the sand all you want, but I still believe people should be aware the kinds of events of the mid 20th century are occurring today.

Why is the word **** being sensored? I thought we all learned that there's no reason to go the "he who shall not be named" rout. Just call the bastard Voldemort and get over it.

****, genocidal bastards, torturers and rapists and murderers--there's nothing wrong with calling evil by it's name.

I saw both episodes, yea, it was history lite.

It also showed how Jews were marginalized, then outcast, then rounded up and slaughtered.

It's not hard to see a similar marginalizing going on now. Lots of otherwise sane people in many countries (including the US) blaming a race of people for the evils of the world. Back then, good people closed their eyes and thus became a part of the problem.

I hope we learn from history so that we don't have to repeat it.

Back to the Original Topic - I watched some of the "Third Reich" on History at 2 am last night. After playing I needed a cool down before bed....

Fome 1936 through 1939. I was riveted. The massive Brain Washing. The genitic clensing. Hitler Youth camps. The Baby Factories! Holy Crap! Our history books back in the 70's never mentioned these things. I found it very informitive. Time Magazine's Man of the Year!? Austria inviting them to take over. Wow.
We better learn from the past.

Glad somebody got the point of my post: it was for WWII history buffs. Yes it was 'light' compared to a number of references extant but still OK considering what passes for 'history' these days in much of the media.

I sure didn't mean to start a bickering thread about the current 'world order' or whatever. Geez...

We can't be afraid to examine such people in depth, it could happen again, easily. This guy, Himmler was a fertilizer salesman, a chicken farmer(failed at both) and found opportunity and identity as he gained stature in the political front. I do find it fascinating when people reinvent themselves, no matter how reprehensible that transofrmation may be. But a failed chicken farmer finding his niche as a mosntrous political and social architect, whose tactics and strategies are studied the world over is pretty incredible. I'm not getting into political discourse, here, but many countries and powers use religious/ethnic slandering as a means to an end, and will continue to do so. You can't be afraid to examine "evil", or the entities who embody the energy and will of torture and murder. Those who don't remebmer the past...

That's right. History channel starts showing cooking shows and many things decidedly not history, but the Military channel (1 and 2) would have a hard time passing off a house hunting show under their present banner.

On another channel I just saw a really good movie starring Daniel Craig, Defiance, telling the story of a group of Jewish people led by three brothers who set up an enclave in the forest of Western Belorussia to avoid German occupation, torture and murder. It was based on Nechama Tec's book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans.. It's a true story. They were able to set up a hospital, a school and a society of sorts under very harsh conditions and their numbers grew to near 1,200 An amazing story of grace and endurance. You can find some interesting information here..http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article....uleId=10007563

Oh, I'm not afraid to examine "evil" - in fact I find it interesting - but I wouldn't use a positively charged word like fascinating about it. I'm sure none of those millions of people who fell victim to Himmler's grand plan, found him very "fascinating".

It's just your choice of words I find questionable, not your interest - I share that.

+1
A book worth reading is "Hitlers willing executioners" by Goldhagen
and the movie Shoa is chilling ,even more so for its lack of gruesome pictures .
Thank god Hitler was a useless General and the ****s too arrogant to see the obvious .

Sadly, world wars are more common than most people admit....
