Have you seen the stats about men dying quite soon into retirement?
Stay safe, SacDave. Apparently, retirement can be bad for your health.

That was my "I'm at home" life for a couple years when I was on the road two weeks and off two weeks. Then it was my unemployed life for a while.
I kinda miss it.

I miss a lot of things from my previous life before retirement, but I enjoy what I have now. It's all balance, and the way you accept things. There is nothing to replace the feeling of a job well done. The scene at the end of "No Country For Old Men" when Tommy Lee Jones is sitting in the kitchen, talking about a dream he had really catches the impact of being retired. Tommy is a great actor to show that in such a short scene without actually saying anything much about retirement. I've been retired 16 months now, I'm fully adjusted, but it was a little bit of a shock at first.

Been retired since 2008.
A LOT less stress in my life....especially....without a 137 mile daily round-trip commute to work. Do I miss working? Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah a.......................... BTW: I live 60 miles west of where they filmed No Country For Old Men (Las Vegas, NM). Steve |

I have a friend from grad school who got a t-track job at a great school at age 43. Then got booted out at the 3rd year review. Hasn't landed anything since that happened 4-5 years ago.

I am retired from one 25 year career, had one month off, and have been in my current position for six years...we have a 16 year old son to get through high school, and save for college.
The best part about my retirement is the monthly pension check and family medical insurance...very thankful to have both. So, call me a pensioner. |

I don't think most people from my generation are ever going to be able to retire. We're going to have to keep working until we fall apart and end up in hospital. But not teaching summers gives me a taste of what retirement would be like. It's a mixed blessing, I like having much more time for my own interests and projects and for building my relationship with my wife, but I also find myself becoming more socially isolated and less organised, which I don't like as much. Congratulations to the OP and the other retirees on this thread, enjoy it and stay healthy, I'm quite sure you earned it! -Gnobuddy |

I'm two years into it now, and I really think I can get used to it. Big thing I miss though is the cameraderie of my past working life, and some of the travel connected with it. But then I don't miss the long, irregular (sometimes) hours that I used to put in. Or getting up at some un-godly hour to go to work!
I worked for 50 years, and I think that's enough! |
