Guitar Shop No-Nos

I mean the tunes you really shouldn't be playing in a guitar shop when you're trying out gear.

My top three would probably be:

1. Smoke On Water
2. Stairway To Heaven
3. Sweet Home Alabama (guilty as charged on this count, your honour...)

Let's hear yours

I remember when I was 17, just starting to play guitar, and I was in a shop attempting badly to play Stairway. As if that was bad enough, I then asked the guy how to play it...luckily he didn't throw me out but happily showed me how it went. I cringe about it now.

Believe it or not, apart from when budding guitarists play the opening bars, I've never actually heard Stairway. And I'm not likely to seek it out, as the Zep I have heard I don't like. All that girly squealing just sounds silly. Same with a lot of rock bands - the "singer" lets them down.

Tin hat on . . .

Other no-nos include:

Plugging the guitar in when the amp is already on, and the volume is up... LOUD.

Playing out of tune. UGH.

Playing everything with saturated gain. Additional points for doing so with the volume up... LOUD.

Bending a string to where it is *just* short of the target note... additional points? Doing so with no or weak vibrato.

It's not a crime not to like Led Zeppelin. To tell you the truth I wouldn't be upset if I never heard Stairway ever again, along with Smoke On the Water and Freebird.

'I let my guitar speak for me...'

My sister found that album somewhere, I love it.

Back on track, I've heard the chugga-chugga-chugga that you get from all the teens many times. I play Stairway, also the intro to Nothing Else Matters, but very quietly in the back corner.

Oh good. I play Barracuda and Sunshine of your Love. But only when I'm testing out which guitar I'm going to buy
