That was awesome of Carter. I get sick of people who are brave at a computer monitor saying things they'd never say to your face.

I don't think Jonzer meant "liberal" in a political sense, but to reinforce the word "enlightened". Just like when we say that we live in a liberal, egalitarian society. He explicitly said he was not being political.

Anyone remember a few years ago when it was Boston vs. Montreal in the playoffs? The match-up was worth note because during the Star Spangled performance before the game the Montreal fans booed the hell out of it. Very tasteless. The next game in Boston was the classiest middle finger reply I'd ever seen. The Boston fans cheered the hell out of O Canada. I was very happy when that happened, Montreal fan or not. Those things that have been said in the present situation shouldn't spoil one's opinion of Boston as a whole.

It's not just sports fans, they just happen to get the most press. People continue to disconnect from each other, so they disconnect from ethical and moral behavior as well. We've quit treating each other as neighbors and started acting like strangers. Sad, really. As I sit here in my 10x10 cabin in an undisclosed location in the mountains with my typewriter as my only companion, I take solace in knowing it will all be over before Christmas......

What's wrong with sports fans in general?

Trash talking has become the norm. Blatant steroid use on their team is accepted. Humility has dissappeared. Win at any cost.

I am just sick of the media making the news and of people over reacting and making a few idiots the news. Look at the Florida thing which has brought out very racist reactions, primarily because the media is playing it up and inciting people to take sides because of race.

A black man making a goal in hockey is news, just like a black man being elected president. These things were just not possible a few decades ago, and still isn't in many other countries.

Rodney said it best. "can't we all just get along".

There are ignorant idiots everywhere..and the internet shows that in spades. Believe me, they don't speak for everyone. I have no time for racists.

Take the average intelligence level. Half of the population are below that. Scary really. Some people are really that stupid and ignorant.

I'll never understand it.

Tonight I'm applying a liberal amount of hot sauce to my burrito.

Agreed. However, much of this is skewed by a few neighborhoods and long-lingering historical bitterness from the busing issues/racial tensions of the '60s.

When I did the 2000 census or came for a historical/cultural event in the Southie/Dorchester area, encountered several ne'er do wells who shouted racial slurs in my direction.

On one occasion, an older friend/supervisor had to restrain me from giving a few racists a NYC style knuckle sandwich for their slurs.

Oh, it's easy to understand. I see it all the time. It is unfortunate that racisim still exists. To condemn Boston for the idiotic actions of a several people is wrong too.

Racists come in all colors - mostly they have an intelligence problem, or rather a lack thereof. I can almost guarantee that the people who made those tweets harass and bully people of their own race, too. They're just looking for an excuse to be stupid.

Sounds enlightened to me
en·light·ened/enˈlītnd/
Adjective:

Having or showing a rational, modern, and well-informed outlook.
Spiritually aware.

Synonyms:
educated

That liberal definition sounds pretty cool, unless you are paying for it

Geez, how many people do we all know that consider themselves liberal or enlightened, who are neither?

"A black man making a goal in hockey is news, just like a black man being elected president. These things were just not possible a few decades ago, and still isn't in many other countries."

Therein lies the issue. It's not, nor should it ever be about color, creed, sexual orientation, what have you. It's about character, ability, skill, sportsmanship, humility (as previously noted), grace, graciousness, and teamwork. We, too many times, place everything around us into little boxes for easy categorization. Why? Measure a man by his words and achievements. Is it so difficult?
