The Beach Boys

Just returned from The Beach Boys concert kicking off their 50th Anniversary tour. Took me back to 62' and my surf band years. Although their sound was created with the help of others on stage the sound was authentic Beach Boys, beautiful harmony's and great music. It brought back great memory's and was a great night! Two highlights were video sinc songs with Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson.

They played Waikaloa shopping center here a few years ago and although I was unable to attend due to family BS I could hear them loud and clear across the street and they sounded wonderful. Viva Beach Boys always!!!!

Not sure who is playing behind them on this tour, but if they are smart they have some of Brian's solo band with the guys from the Wondermints. Those guys show a real respect and affection for the music. I saw a few of Brian's shows and it made me sad that he was so damaged (though, of course, the fact that he can even get on stage at all is a major victory)- but the sheer wonderfulness of the songs just can't be beat. How was the Mike Love factor?

Don't know all the Wondermints but a quick google tells me they were all there! Fifteen in total, (including the BB's). Brian came on stronger in the second half of the show. Mike did good as did Al and Bruce. Must look at the positive, Brian created so much great music. They did a few songs from Pet Sounds, and rocked the house all night.

Man o Man, I'm jealous. I saw them in the early '70's, but not since . . .

My first real concert was The Beach Boys in the early 60's.
At the California State Fair in Sacramento.
The first and only time I've seen them.

It was the second time I have seen them. Long ago in Phoenix, they were all alive then. They bring back so many memories!

First concert I ever saw was the Beach Boys with the Lovin' Spoonful opening. Great show. They were wearing those grey and white striped shirts they used to wear, and they rode Honda motor bikes onto the stage.

Love the Beach Boys !! Grew up listening to them everyday on the radio as a kid.
Also remember watching them live on black+white tv and thinking how cool they were.

Showing our age I guess huh guys?

Sounds like most on this thread are in support of this recent reunion/tour... frankly I'm surprised.

How do you come to terms with the fact they have musicians playing behind them? I really can't get on board with that. I'm surprised people would pay to see something like that.

I saw a clip of them from the Jimmy Fallon show... I thought it was pretty weak.

Just my opinion.

Almost every well-known band has augmented their live act with extra musicians for years - the Stones, Who, the Band, Nirvana, on and on...the audience wants to hear the sound of the original recording (for the most part), and very few studio recordings are made live by the band members, with no overdubs or additional musicians.
As for the BB's sounding weak...considering that they are in their 60's or 70's trying to sing parts that most 20 year old guys can't hit, I think they sound pretty good.

I have to agree.
I like to think that I have a pretty good singing voice, but I can't hit half of those notes.
For me personally, I don't care who's doing the actual playing. Having grown up with them, and speaking for myself, I feel they are a big part of our musical culture. For being in their 60s-70s I think they still sound pretty darn good.
Would I pay to go see them live? Hell ya !!

I could hear them from a great distance at the Jazz Fest as I walked the track on my way to the gate to leave - and got a glimpse of them on the Jumbotron - they had a huge crowd - they did sound fine -

If it works for ya great... I couldn't stomach it for free in the comfort of my living room, let alone paying to go see them sound like 75% of what they used to sound like.

Getting old sucks. Getting old and continuing your craft when it's diminished is criminal. I don't want to see a 50-year old Michael Jordan getting worked up and down the court... why would I want to see this??

While I wouldn't consider laying out money to see the Stones, at least they do still sound good (at least on fairly recent tours). Beach Boys? Not so much.
