IMO....being 'good' at something is determined by the outside world.

For example...for me....I would say I'm confident and proficient with my efforts as a musician/writer but would leave words like 'good' to be determined by the listeners.
Since I'm out of my live band era music is just my own personal therapy so I don't do it to receive approval/validation from the outside world.
Of course, compliments on one's efforts has it's own rewards and is quite motivating.

That's my take on it....carry on.

So what if you are better than 99.999% of the planet. They don't own a guitar
or a tele.

Good is what it is to you..grasshopper

No, you're right, i used the word 'good' as that is what others might say, yet you still say to yourself, were they just being 'nice'?

sorry just me being me

we're our own worst critics

yet we still need someone else, convincingly to say, okay maybe not good but i liked it

or something like it

yer right, good is a bad word

'it said something to me' is closer but there's no word for that

For me, good isn't my goal. I see being Good as the key to a door behind which is a monster who guards the passage that leads to Better, which is a key to a door with an even bigger monster with more teeth who guards the Hall of Even Better But There's Still More to Learn, and Even Better is the key to a bigger door with another dang monster with even more teeth and horns...

It helps to enjoy something if you're gonna do the work to get good. Though I've found joy in simply getting good at something I don't necessarily like doing.

Isn't that the truth.

I just turned 65 and I"m still very good at finding flaws in my efforts and frequently wonder how I've gotten any song finished (I know...are we ever totally done with a song?) after all these years.

Carry on...

You have to set your own goals. Only you can push yourself if you haven't attained them. I know when I have not had my best performance, so when someone in the audience says how good it was, I take it with a grain a salt. I am happy to know that they felt that way, but I still have to meet my standards and goals. The truth is I seldom feel like I nailed everything in a full night of music. I also know I tend to be harder on myself than the average listener.

How good do you have to be? This is a very subjective and personal thing for each of us. It depends on what you are referring to? For me, adequate to get the job at hand done without doing harm to myself, someone else, or their personal property.

How do you know when you're any good at anything? I think I know when I am good at something when I can accomplish a task easier and quicker than I have in the past. Again, without hurting myself, or someone else...

Does it make me happy? Oh yes, ecstatic!

many of the things i want to be 'good' at, i'm apparently not ...(people aren't coming to me)

many of the things i'm reasonably successful at aren't really that important to me...

happy? i'm reasonably happy i suppose, or at least, at peace much of the time. things are slowly improving with age.

Good: I think you only accept that qualifier from your peers.
Happy: That alone would not make me happy. Might get a grin though.

Pretty simple, if you are any good, other's will point it out, brag on you and generally tell the world how much better it is for having you in it. If you're not any good, you'll have to take care of it for yourself.

i dunno, you can be really good at something and no one comes to you, maybe just because it's not popular and there's not any demand for it.
