Used Epiphone LP Special II - $115
used Randall RG30 - $40

Not my first choice for playing, but I put some D ang G bass strings on the Epi and tuned it to like B or something. It sounds neat through a 12" speaker.

Oh wait, less than $300 for each piece of equipment? That's probably more than half of my stuff.

My cheapest combo would be my affinity tele (70$) and my pathfinder 10 (50$) = 120$

I could put together a rig consisting of a $25 Apollo and a $20 Alamo 2525 . . . but it would have to be miked for any venue larger than my living room.

If I wanted to gig super cheap, I'd take my Roland Cube 60, bought used for $100. And my weird and freaky Epi "Slasher" Firebird, $99. The amp has FX, and so does the guitar, so technically, I'm betting I could gig with just those and nothing else. It woudn't even be close to ideal, but I could do it.

My best cheap guitar ever was an Ibanez RG Hardtail I bought for $150. I dug through my parts drawer for a nice Fender 3-way switch, and a pair of SD '59 buckers, and gigged the snot outt a that guitar. PLayed like a dream, stayed in tune great, and was a fun platform to absolutely plaster with layer upon layer of stickers.

I gave it away. I miss it, but I didn't need it, and the guy who got it really did.

$600 Wow I could buy some gear and a car for that much.

My choices...

$10 Silverface Super Reverb

$120 1957 Strat

That leaves me $470 for Rum

Used Classic Vibe 50 into a Pro Junior. If you drive a real hard bargain maybe a Bad Monkey, too!

I used to think that my rig was a cheap one until I came across this thread.

For me, the < $300 guitar requirement is the sticking point. My 3 Teles are great deals for what they are (custom made for a great price), but they're well above that price category.

Actually, wait a minute. My BSB Logan Custom (far left in the pic above) was a gift.

I mean, it's worth more than 3 times the < $300 requirement, but if the requirement is based on out-of-pocket expense, not worth, then one of my Teles qualifies.

As for the amp part of the equation, like Tim Armstrong said, that's easy. And also like Tim, a Vox Pathfinder 15R is my amp in this cheap rig equation. It sounds surprisingly good, and gets gigged the most. And I bought it used from a pawn shop for $40 out the door, so it comes in way under budget for the requirements of this thread.

Oh, and my backup amps also come in well under budget. I have 3 Peavey amps bought off of eBay for around $150 each: a Bandit 65, a Bandit 75 and an early TransTube Studio Pro 112.

Epiphone Les Paul Std. Got in a trade for a Dano that I paid $40 for. Roland BC30. Free. Sold my Deluxe some years ago and the dude felt bad for me, cuz I was pretty tore up about it. He gave me his Blues cube. Turned out to be a sweet amp. Combined with a Boss FDR1 that I grabbed off Craigs for like $25....I can do pretty much whatever I need.

I also have a Squier Deluxe strat in Daphne blue that was pretty cheap too. Don't recall how much but it was less than $200. Its an amazing guitar. A keeper. I have more pricy gear in my lil studio, but I would and I have used these cheapo's up against guys with some real upscale gear, and never had an issue.

I don't like the OD on the Pathfinder that much. However, plug in a Cool Cat TOD and the result is very sweet indeed! There's 'verb on there already, but for slapback a Fab Echo does the job. My Squier VMC II was £160 so easily comes in the $300 price range.

This little lot really is very versatile and toneful. In a blindfold test I bet most people wouldn't put this down as a 'cheap' rig.

We all hear the legendary stories of "I saw this old amp at a garage sale", well often they are true. I have dozens of examples of items that are passed down to loved ones and are sold off due to taking up space or lack of use. I shoudl start a thread on them. It'll make your head spin.

PS: I missed out on the '57

This isn't really fair, 'cause I have some gear I got really cheap 20+ years ago, but here goes: '62 Harmony H-74 (Dearmonds, Bigsby)-$100
Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve-$100, Maestro Echoplex-$100.
For more recent stuff: Danelectro U-2 re-issue-$250, Danelectro BLT slap echo-$20, Line6 AX212, used, $250. I'm not gonna list any of the stuff I got for free.........
