Oh hail

Woke up this morning(4:30) to the sound of thunder. I had already been through two bad hail storms in as many days. The last one only 12 hours earlier. 15 minutes later all hell broke loose, this was the worse so far. I don't remember any rain, only dime to quarter size hail coming down like a thunderstorm.

After the sun came up was when it really hit me. All the blooms and leaves that had come out on our trees were stripped from their branch's. I hope my apple trees survive, time will tell. The roof is leaking through the ceiling in 5 rooms. The ice is almost 2 inches thick on a bench by the house. The roof is mostly covered with ice, but what is showing isn't pretty.

It's made me think about all the others that have been victims of bad weather. I've been walking in circles all morning trying to figure out what's next. I can only imagine how it would feel if your house or whole town was destroyed in an instant. It's funny, I grew up in Florida and have been through several hurricanes, they didn't affect me like this.

The good news, all of my family is safe and we have a (leaky) roof over our heads. I heard the cat howling during the storm, but could not get to him. No sign of him yet. No loss of guitars and such. Funny how unimportant that seems ATM. No news coverage of this event yet, so I have no idea if anyone was hurt. I'm rambling, I just needed to put all of this down. The insurance office opens tommorrow, I'll go from there.

Glad to hear you and your family are okay. That's the only important thing. Roof repairs are easy enough to do.

That's exactly what I keep telling my wife. She just got off of the phone with her son, he said there is more on the way. Fingers crossed!

We got a bunch of hail as well. It was not nearly as bad here as you described where you live. Glad everybody is okay. Storms like that can be scary.

Mrs Fart has called her family, which is scattered across the state and no-one has had any hail. I was beginning to think I had offended someone .

Southwood Guitars, do you build or sell guitars by chance? I'm always looking for a new place to check out.

I live in western NC and we have been getting hail on a regular basis the past week. I do build guitars as a hobby. The name of the street I live on is Southwood. That's where that comes from. The mods have asked me that as well. I maybe should have thought about that before I registered that as my name on the forum.

That makes sense (since?) I thought since you had seen hail you were closer. My wife's mother lives in Mitchell county and hasn't seen any hail. Of course she lives so far west the sun rises and sets in Tennesee. No lie

I live in Watauga county and my wife works in Avery. It seems there was more hail near the Wat. Avery line than where we live. What part of the state are you in? I have a friend in Charlotte that does roofing for insurance companies. Mostly hail damage. He stays so busy it's not funny.

Avery county?????
Avery county is so small that it only has 3 stop lights. The fourth was in the Robo Car wash in Newland and it closed years ago ;-)

I had to look at the map to figure that out - forgot how wiggly the border was over there.

Sorry to hear about the damage; I've never had that experience myself although I've been scared a couple times. Seen dented cars, trees blown over, but the house has always gotten lucky.

It took me a minute on the car wash thing. That's funny! Yep not much over there but Floridians. No offense to Floridians. There are a huge amount of second homes in that area.

Update; our beloved cat, Ernie Balls, just showed up covered with pine needles and yowling like a rabid Tom. He came in long enough to eat and get the needles pulled out of his fur. The clouds are getting thick and it's getting colder. Looks like we're in for another run.

Southwood, you were asking what part of the state. We live in Davie County between Statesville and Winston-Salem.

FWIW I'm originally from Florida.I left in the mid '90s to find work that paid more than $5/hour. I can tell you that most people who say they are from Florida are actually from somewhere else, they just live there. If I had a dollar for everytime I heard "things are much better in location X" I'd own a second home in the mountains too.

Great line about the carwash in Newland, MrCairo

We're hunkerin' down......

Sorry about your leaks. The weight of the ice and the contraction probably had something to do with that. Glad your family is okay. Hopefully you can get the roof done reasonably. Go up in the attic and see where the problem spots are. Maybe a couple of easy fixes, maybe not. Best of luck.

Well it is only fitting that NASCAR is here today. Forecast is blowin' and rainin'. All is calm but a little cool right now. Got to run some errands before the rain comes.

My Honda S-2000 stays at The Cabin in far western North Carolina.

We must've got hit back on March 2, because I got back up there the other day and found the windshield tore up and a good bit of hail damage. No fun at all.

Reluctant to fix the body it since I see no end to the hail. Might get a garage built, then fix it.

I planted a small grove of heritage apples. In 1900 North Carolina had over 200 varieties of apples. Today the number is closer to 50. My wife got me intersted in all these apples I'd never heard of, so 4 years ago I planted several Virginia Beauties, Virginia Golds, Grimes Goldens, Wolf Rivers, Red Sheepnose and Dula Beauties. I plan on clearing out a small stand of pines this year and planting some more varieties, maybe a pear tree or two.

I was able to look them over this morning. The hail took some buds, broke branches and beat the bark up, but I think they will survive. I doubt I'll get any apples this year though. Before the storm I thought this might be our first harvest.

I don't think I ever heard of Smokehouse. What's the story on those?

I just googled the apples, those are some big boys. Funny enough, the guy I buy my trees from sells those too. I might have to put a tree or two in the ground this fall.

Be careful . I have seen trees labeled as Smokehouse that look right but lack the flavor , weight and size of the originals . Check into the origin of his stock . If they are right , you won't regret it . I can take a bushel of Smokehouse and sit them in a house for an afternoon and when you walk in after that , all you will smell is apples .
Does you guy bud or graft his own ? I could send some cuttings for budding in July/August or January for grafts .
I will give you a hint on using Smokehouse for sauce . Peel them before you cook them down and you won't regret it . If you don't get too much water in the batch , sugar will not be needed .
These old varieties have so much to offer .

He has an apple orchard that has been in his family since 1872. He does his own grafting. I planted my trees deep enough to have them grow to full size, some of them are 10+ feet tall. I was really hoping to have a crop this year, but probably not. I've tasted apples from the trees the cuttings are from. DELICIOUS! I was 40 when I tasted my first Va Beauty it changed my view of apples for ever. Since then eating a red delicious is like eating saw dust.

I would be Very interested in some cuttings. My source does not have any available ATM. I need to read up on how to get cuttings ready for planting. I'm really enjoying this thread.

Scions for budding are done in mid to late summer . Scions for grafting are done when the trees are dormant . Cuttings are not planted unless you are going to try cloning . I have never tried cloning .
I have the growers in Adams county close by for sourcing rootstocks and for professional budding .
Full size trees will grow to over 25' tall . The rootstock will determine whether you will get standard , semi dwarf or dwarf .
I still like red delicious , but I prefer many of the older varieties . The only bad apple is a rotten one .
I am fortunate to have been eating Smokehouse since being birth .
Do you have any Spitzenburg ?
I can go on about this stuff endlessly .
If you are willing to come here soon , I will give a tree , since I have a few extras . These are directly from the old tree . You could take your own cuttings after planted .
I would even bring you one if I weren't tied down by a week old litter of puppies right now .
