Opinions on the $89 Epi Les Paul Jr??

Played one at the local Geetar Center last night. I thought it sounded great, not just for the price. Loved the big fat neck. No neck gap. Finish was good (a little thick looking though). Wonderful sustain too. Tuners weren't really doing the job very good, but for $89 that can be forgiven. Anybody own one of these? I know they are dirt cheap, and of course cannot be compared to a Gibson, but it seems like a great knock around beater.

I have one.

I find it to be a nice solid little guitar. I recommend trying a bunch of 'em before pulling the trigger.

One of the best guitars I ever owned was a double-cutaway Epi LP Jr with a Duncan Vintage P90. That thing was light as a feather, and rocked and rolled like few others. I'm not a big fan of the humbuckers in the newer ones. Something about that just seems unnatural.

Sadly, though the finish looked okay when I got it, after about a year of heavy use, it started peeling up in large strips around the bridge, and I retired it to hanging-on-the-wall duty. This is when my Tele became my #1.

Still, the Jrs are a real bargain for player-quality axes. If kids didn't care about being flashy, they'd do well with a Jr. over a pointy BC. Rich. Sadly, looks do matter, and a kid will play a guitar more if it looks good, so quality will have to take a backseat until the young'ins grow up a little.
