As you won't have much time to waste when your gear arrives, make sure you're well stocked with strings, fresh batteries, plectrums, notepad and pens, blank CDs, coffee or other refreshments, all your minor but essential items.
Aslo, if you're recording to hard disc, make sure you have plenty of disc space available, and defrag the disc. |

I had the Behringer mixer for awhile--very nice little mixer. Got it primarily because I needed phantom power for my condenser mike. Sold it when I upgraded my audio interface to an Emu 1820, which has a preamp and phantom power built in it. Jeff in Boston |

Good luck man, you've got pretty much the same setup as I do now, 'cept I'm using a Sure Beta 57a, and cakewalk software.
Now the trick is to capture the sounds that your ears hear. Do multiple takes, doubletrack, and pan things around in the stereo field. You'll have a blast. Also, I don't know if Pro Tools comes with a guitar amp sim plugin, but you might want to try that too for basic purposes and silent recording. I'm having good luck with the Cakewalk one. Believable, maybe not, but workable for demo purposes.

The feature you're looking for is called real-time "input monitoring." With your SoundBlaster, as with mine, you're not going to get very good results if you're using any effects. You can choose to have your sound card simply amplify the input signal by clicking on the sound icon in the system tray, and unmuting the line-in input. If you want to add effects, you won't be able to hear them real time. You'll wind up with about a half-second delay between playing and hearing the result. It's very disorienting.
As for other software, Google "Audacity." It's a good free package. I like my Cakewalk Sonar, but it's expensive. There's plenty of others out there too. Honestly though, the nicer packages like Sonar and ProTools really need a better sound card to do the processing that they are capable of. Mine crashed on a regular basis when I add too many effects.

Thanks Ben! I'm actually using Audacity right now, I gave up on ProTools, I've got the hang of most of it, but I'm still nit-picking. I gues I can put up with not being able to listen to what I'm playing...
But one thing I think I must be able to do is record a guitar part, and then record another over it while listening to the first one, I can multi lyer guitar tracks right now but I can't listen to my backing track while I record a lead part over it, which is infuriating! |
